For you there isn’t a boundary. It seems any topic ultimately prompts a political response from you. ......
Not me squire! Somebody turned this thread off-topic and political by blaming the "woke", long before I chipped in!

Woke seems to be the whistle that calls you every time. Ever consider that people might be baiting you?
The very odd thing about the people who don't want to allow talk about politics is how much they talk about not talking about politics.
Could be simpler if they simply stopped talking about politics? Have you ever considered it, and if not why not? :ROFLMAO:

I tried to turn the conversation back to a more diverse discussion but you seem unable to do that. Have fun with another thread you have bogged down.

You'd do that better by simply not talking about it. n.b. It wasn't me that kicked it off anyway - there seem to be lots of political comments in the thread, and you seem to want to keep it going!

Is there a boundary? Consider the word "conservative", is it just about being reluctant to look at change or is it a political creed?
It is possible for a word to have two meanings, just as it is possible for a word that sounds the same to have two different spellings.

Strangely the political conservative in favouring market forces over legislative control encourages risk taking in the pursuit of profit - the antithesis of conservative behaviours.

Labour creates a similar conundrum - the traditional socialist ideal of "from each according to their ability and to each according to their need" runs counter to the political "Labour" which traditionally identifies workers over the wealthy, privileged and those less able to work.

The thread started in contemplating some fundamental life issues which should be entirely separate from political musings which could include beliefs and issues related to:
  • is there an afterlife
  • who will remember me when I've gone and does it matter
  • does heaven or hell exist
  • do my actions and behaviours during life drive my experience in the afterlife (if there is one)
  • should my (probably) declining years be spent in service to the community, over-indulgence or simple personal enjoyment
  • etc etc

Exactly the same meaning here from a leading tory MP and PM, Lord Salisbury: “Whatever happens will be for the worse, and therefore it is in our interest that as little should happen as possible”. Conservatives had a duty to postpone change. In 1892 he said: “The use of Conservatism was to delay changes till they become harmless.”

Unless the passing of time adds to its import, it is possible that proof of argument based upon a quote 133 years (about 6 generations) old is somewhat dubious.

Fairly contemporary, nothing changes (much!): The Salisbury Group itself was set up in 1978 to support the view of the Third Marquess of Salisbury that "good government consisted of doing as little as possible."

Difficult to find out much about the Salisbury Review. A limited company set up using the name has an income below £40k. The directors are long retired - the oldest now 83.

The main journalists are also elderly and appear not to be remunerated - I assume they see it as a "calling" rather than a "living". There are no details of funding or common support from Tories.

As a piece of "evidence" to support a case it is inconsequential - views which are supported (I suspect) by a small number of right wing Tories. About as relevant as suggesting Socialist Worker or Morning Star are representative of Labour political philosophy.

All political parties have a "nutter wing" - both left and right.

Not at all. It was mainstream conservative thought until Thatcher came along. Scruton only popped off recently.

Which publications do you think represent the non nutty wing of left and right?

Three points:-
- In my early 20's I pulled a park bench out of the skip at school. I repaired it with pieces of Oak and Iroko/Teak. It has stood outside unprotected since and given good service. Over 35 years later it needed some more attention and I was a bit annoyed that I could not find any Iroko/Teak to make one of the repairs and would have to use Oak again. Then I realised, why am I worried and used the Oak.
- Around about the same time I was talking with my sixth form group one morning and one said "who wants to be 84?" to which I replied "somebody who is 83 1/2".
- And when the time does come, I'll try and recall something Chris Evans on the radio said. When you look at an obituary or Gravestone it has two dates and a dash between those dates. That dash was important because it was your life. make the most of that dash.

I’ve made a difference this morning - unfortunately a bad one. I lit a bonfire without thinking what may be nestled in there and am now guilty of hedgehog manslaughter.

Just considering what penance I need to perform.

I seriously feel quite bad about it!
Unfortunately there is no going back so find a recipe and eat it. Probably too late now.

For you there isn’t a boundary. It seems any topic ultimately prompts a political response from you. It must be difficult coping in a world where everything you see, do or hear hinges on a plot by the right wing.
As I’ve mentioned before I have zero interest in politics and certainly don’t live my life in constant angst as to how left or right someone’s views are.
Totally agree ,I 've also got no interest in any faction of the political scene except as an endless source of both humour and frustration from all of them. Their main strengths seem to be the ability to convince the LCD to vote them into power at which point they seem to both have immediate memory loss and run out of ideas. Twas ever thus.

Poor old cozzer is still trying to figure out the meaning of life and has probably become despondent and suicidal over the lack of help 🤣
Whats the number for the samaritans? No jacob, dont post your number 😆😁

The problem with having "no interest in any faction of the political scene" is that they have a huge influence on every facet of your life, whether you like it or not. Not engaging with them simply reduces you to the status of another drop of the apathetic oil which ensures that your interests are brushed aside or ground down in the most efficient way.

Representative democracy is designed to permit the LCD to elect people of their own ilk to handle the levers of power on their behalf; the promises made by such folk in order to get their hands on those levers are only indicative of a broad intention. As we all know, politics is the art of the possible, so election promises are often watered down, or even discarded, in the harsh light of reality.

The only thing that Democracy can achieve is to p*ss off everyone in roughly equal measure...
