Not at all.
It's very common to be led to believe that civilisation is just some sort of communist plot which will lead to the gulags etc. Lazy thinking!
No coincidence that it suits the oligarchs to discourage progress, as they do ceaselessly through the media, 99% of which they own.
You have to think for yourself and not in terms of vague and simplistic labels.

I feel I still haven't polished any skills enough to define it as a "craft" yet. Most of my projects, until recently, have been born out of a need/desire to have something and I'll always try to fix/make something before I buy it or pay someone else to do it. So probably cheapskate is the most applicable label.

Joiner - furniture maker. 30 odd years...
Most work nowadays is of a subcontracting nature.
They send me drawings, I make the wooden bits, when they pay me, they're free to take them off my hands..

It's weird as I know the ins and outs of many machines to a fairly detailed level, I sell them but I'm not a full time woodworker as a trade. When it comes down to doing stuff around the house, I often over compensate and take forever to do a simple job making it overly complicated and pull out tools I have kicking around and take too long to do something - if this was was my trade I'd probably be bankrupt is the reality.

I would say I'm 10% attainment and 80% effort type of person at this

So, I was talking to a friend who is a 1st fix carpenter about how we refer to ourselves as far as our woodwork goes, like a lot of others on building sites he prefers chippy which I know to anyone outside of construction would be an insult. This got me thinking (dangerous I know but it does happen from time to time) what would you guys consider yourself, until I discovered woodturning I would have said that I'm a keen and able DIYer that could do most basic woodworking, a year on from my first turning I would now class myself as an amateur woodturner.
Over to you guys.
