I do see your point, though. My childhood phone number was 64729.
I guess it was easier to remember a number on a rotary phone. It wasn't just a number, but
rather a combination of visual, motoric, audio, tactile... things that helped you to remember.
Nowadays, it is a bit sanitized, with no such "crutches" to help you.
Age-related memory loss doesn't help either.

Definitely remember girl friends number was 'name of town' 29.
I had to ask the operator to make the connection.
Took a while for the town to be upgraded to 4, and later six digits.

When I was a lad we used to send a messenger on horse back across to the next castle hoping he wouldn’t be captured by the marauding hoards. Good old days.

I think you will find that the pattern of numbers on keypads are what a lot of people remember and not the numbers. A friend caught her 2 year old using her mobile phone and after a bit of investigation proved that the nipper had remembered the pattern of the lock code.Yes...but...
