    Colour-coded sandpaper

Some time ago I bought some sandpaper sheets with colour-coded backs, made in Australia I believe. I've almost used it all, does anyone know if this is still available in the UK and, if so, from where ?

    Looking for hardwood supplier

I want to have a go at making some furniture in hardwood, probably ash to start with. I live near Lampeter, which is on the north side of the bottom 'bulge' of Wales, about halfway between Carmarthen and Aberystwyth. Can anyone recommend a hardwood supplier in this area that does suitably...

    Child-safe wood filler

Is there such a thing as a child-safe wood-filler ? I'm making some hardwood Xmas toys and need to hide my mistakes ( ). The only reference to child-safe filler I can find on Google is 'Red Devil Spackle', but that appears to be for filling plasterboard walls rather than wood.

Best way to remove new wax finish ?

I've just got myself a Chestnut Buffing Wheel kit, so I'm still in the learning-zone. I'm working on a dovetailed lime box at the moment, sanded and nyweb'd to a smooth finish, sealed with cellulose sanding sealer, and then buffed with the 'B' wheel (white compound) and the 'C' wheel (with the...

    What's a 'Coates Vice' ?

I saw a picture of part of a 'Coates™ Vice' in the https://www.ukworkshop.co.uk/forums/chest-of-drawers-wip-slow-hand-tool-project-t87014-90.html thread, about 1/2-way down page 7. I can find no reference to this vice in either the forum search or a general Google search, could some kind soul...

    Strange marks on a bowl

I have some odd marks I don't understand. I've turned this bowl from tulipwood (first time I've used it), about 6-1/2" diameter. I turned it in the usual fashion. I sanded to 600 grit, mainly with a rotary sander, and then Nyweb'd it to yellow (which is, I think, 1000 grit), I applied shellac...

    Electrical help needed

Is there such a thing as an '*OR*' mains relay ? I need a relay which will make the output 'live' when either one of two inputs is live.

    Wasps !

The wasp season is upon us - I've removed a few proto-nests already, but they're building something between two planks just above my shed door, which I can't get at. Is there anything I can spray up there to dissuade the little sods, but which won't harm anything else ?

    Kity 663 spindle thread etc.

Two questions :- 1) Does anyone know the headstock spindle thread (and thread-form) for a Kity 663 ? 2) If a chuck is described as attaching to the spindle by a 'standard 1" 8tpi', what is the thread-form likely to be ?

    DIY Secondary Glazing

Has anyone got any recommendations or "steer clear of..."s for DIY Secondary Glazing suppliers ? I have three old fairly small 2-light upstairs windows in wooden frames to de-draught and insulate. I have in mind a 2-track system with slideable and removable panes, which will have to be toughened...

    Turning RPM tables ?

For metal-turning I've always used tables or nomograms giving the optimum rotational speed depending on material, diameter, operation and direction of cut. Does anything similar exist for wood-turning ?

    Fermenting cupboard

Gentlefolk - I offer this not because it's a masterpiece of the craftsman's art (it isn't), but because it's an easier way of making home-brew beer, and I've never seen one or heard one described. Basically it's a heated, insulated cupboard with temperature control, about 4ft high and 2 ft...

    silly question about knotting

A silly question really, but one I've never seen answered anywhere - when making things in 'ordinary' whitewood, should the knotting be applied before sanding, or after ?

    Bandsaw Blades advice sought

I've recently acquired a Kity 612 bandsaw. One of the things I want to do is to take thin slices off reasonable large (4" deep) blocks of various hardwoods, for making boxes. I'm not sure what blades to use - The bandsaw will take blades up to 3/4" wide. I assume that the wider blade will help...

    Kity

Anyone familiar with 'Kity' tools ? It's not a brand I'm familiar with, are they sound/reliable/good-value or not even to be touched with a barge-pole ?

    'Child-safe' wood glue ?

Hi. I want to make my grand-daughter a baby's rattle rather like this one http://lumberjocks.com/projects/44896 , but in beech. I've bought some child-safe rattle inserts and intend to embed one in the handle. I'll have to bore a hole for it, and and cap the hole with a glued-in plug of the same...

    Leylandii

Until I saw the 6th post in https://www.ukworkshop.co.uk/forums/wood-id-please-and-thin-sided-bowl-t64356.html: I was under the impression that it was useless for anything woodwork- or woodturn-ish. I have a big pile of the stuff in a field, in logs anything up to a foot diameter, from chopping...

    Turning Laburnum and Yew

I've acquired a small hoard of wood from a former tree-surgeon, most of it properly seasoned for several years. There's quite a lot of Laburnum and Yew in it - I know the foliage of both trees is poisonous, but are there any special precautions I should take before turning either of these...

    Sanding Sealer and Knotting

Having used Sanding Sealer for the first time when I recently started turning, I'm about to try it on flat work too.Not sure what the wood is, just (good quality) sawn softwood from the local timber yard. The question is, should I apply the Knotting before the Sanding Sealer, or after ?
