I've found it very enjoyable to make things used in the workshop. Tool Chest, Workbench, Mallet etc. These wooden try squares are also a fun little project using up scraps, in this case some beech with nice colour variation. They are a version of a try square used by British woodworkers. The version shows up in Seatons tool chest and in my 1930's joinery book.

The biggest challenge is making sure the mortice and tenon fit well, too tight and it'll break the tongue due to it being quater sawn (ask me how I know) and too slack it will not be reliable. Goldilocks effect required!

If you have some scraps it's a good skill builder and a reminder that square is square and you don't have to (unless you want to) buy engineer's tools for highly accurate woodworking.

Hope you enjoy the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XI42_RwxYAw
