Can a website be secure if there is no padlock? Is there another way to check security.

cheers,

Ike

Yes..and it annoys the hell out of me since you don't see the https bit and padlock. I always thought that it had to be an https site to be secure (in the context of e-commerce) but found out that it isn't necessary.

Mind you it's difficult working out if it really is secure. There should be something on the website that says Thawte or similar.

Hopefully someone will be along in a bit with more knowledge than me.

I suspect that there are more articles on internet safety and fraud than you can shake a stick at.

Here is one for starters on banking:
http://www.myfinances.co.uk/bank-ac...sers-ignore-simple-security-steps-$469460.htm
Another on general net buying
http://www.yell.com/consumer/purchasing/home.html

Dont forget that there are other ways you can be attacked by hackers if you do not keep up your security and anti virus software up to the mark.

I always prefer to see the https bit and padlock - at least you feel the information you are providing is being encrypted. Although it is possible for someone with the right equipment and knowledge to see what you are typing at a remote location. With that cheering thought I will go :D

Cheers :)

They don't make it at all clear on that bicycle site. However if you buy something from them and proceed through the various steps of the transaction you arrive at a Thawte certified page which actually carries out the transaction for you.
The issue for me is that you have entered your cc details just prior to this stage, so that the bike site can transfer those details to SEC pay (who does the CC checking thing) The problem being that until you arrive at the SECpay page the transaction is not necessarily encrypted so the CC details potentially have been transmitted without encryption.
Cheers Mike

Thanks Mike,

Doesn't sound ideal but I might have to take the chance. I'm trying to source an obsolete chainring and they're like rocking horse poo!

cheers,

Ike

Some people keep a credit card solely for internet purchases but with a very low credit limit. Might be worth considering?

Hhmm...thinks... I've got one with a very low credit balance.
