Well eventually got the nut off the headstock spindle. Would not budge so drilled and cut it off and made a new one.
The bearings were rough. Managed to find replacements from the local bearing shop. RHP but old stock and cost the equivalent of 80 dollar/pounds.
While the spindle was out got a spliced endless belt made up. Cost more than the bearings but no more click/click.
Replaced the 1pH motor with a 1.5Kw 3ph and inverter. Wired up a remote stop/start/speed control box as well.
The next problem was being able to use all my existing chucks. Resolved this by using a Nova tailstock adapter. See pics.
Also made some extra tool post/rests.
Been using it for a while now and very happy. Solid and no vibrations.
I do have a problem removing the tailstock and fitting the patternmakers slide. Far to heavy so am in the process of installing a wall to wall gantry with an electric hoist. Will save my old back.
A friend is making an indexing plate to fit on the outboard end. Will post some pics when done.
