An elderly couple had a son, who was still living with them.
The parents were a little worried, as the son was still unable to decide about his future career.
So they decided to do a small test.

They put a note on the front hall table that they had gone away for a while. Along with the note they put a £20 note, a Bible, and a bottle of whiskey.
Then they hid, pretending they were not at home.
The father tells his wife, “If our son takes the money, he will be a businessman, if he takes the Bible, he will be a clergy, but if he takes the bottle of whiskey, I’m afraid our son will be a no-good drunkard.”

So the parents hid in the nearby closet and waited nervously.
Peeping through the keyhole they saw their son arrive. The son read the note that they had left.
Then he took the £20 note, looked at it against the light, and slid it in his pocket.
After that, he took the Bible, flipped through it, and put it under his arm.
Finally, he grabbed the bottle, opened it, and took an appreciative sip to be assured of the quality.
Then he went to his room, carrying all three items.

The father slapped himself on the forehead and said: “This is worse than I could ever have imagined!”
“What - Why?" asked the wife.
“Our son is going to be a politician!”

Seems pertinent!

I heard a very good description of our political system the other day
”they’re just different cheeks of the same bottom”

This is just paranoia from our so called leaders, look how bad it got for the Americans who thought everyone was a russian spy and they wasted huge sums of money on the cold war. We really do not want to be putting up barriers with China as without them our economy flat lines, much better to accept they do things differently but get them on side because we really do not have any other options. If they are "spying" then it is far more likely to be just market research to better understand us and our needs so they can further grow their economy or maybe they find the antics in westminster just a good comedy show.

Why do t we have options?

Only because we have offshored all our manufacturing to China that we don't make many household items any more.

Better to promote a more balanced economy that makes things rather than a consumer one where we buy tat from B+M (other tat stores are available!) And then dump it a year later because it breaks.

This gives jobs especially to the less educated and also reduces shipping miles.

I think they've got something on a top tory or three. Plenty to be going on what with the blatant corruption - the Michelle Mone affair being just one of many.
Most of them are extremely rich and they didn't earn it simply through hard work in the good old fashioned way.

@Jacob Tony Blair, enough said!
Yep. Margaret Thatcher's protegee. Another posh rich kid, Fettes, Oxford, Law etc. Gift of the gab but basically a talentless establishment figure, and arguably a war criminal.

I don’t believe good old Tony was ever a conservative or a protege of Maggie.

Are you aware of how many millionaires there are in the Labour Party? Being wealthy is not exclusive to Conservatives!

an establishment figure on the same side, in spite of early promises
or a protege of Maggie.

I didn't say it was exclusive to the tories and it makes no difference to the point.

Do you actually read stuff that you make reference to? If you do, do you actually consider what it’s actually saying?
Thatcher was highlighting that her policies had brought into stark contrast the idiosyncrasy of labours left wing strategy and forced them to move towards the centre, i.e. New Labour, in order to stand a chance of winning an election. She was highlighting the death of the socialist agenda that had failed to allow labour to come into power. Absolutely nothing to do with Tony being a Thatcher protege. Her greatest achievement was highlighting the absurdity of socialism by her capitalist agenda that won elections.

We are back to your ‘I think it, so it must be’.

I don’t really see what the issue is with spy’s being caught, every country has spys operating in every other country. The West all spy on one another! The US of A was caught spying on European countries not that long ago. The art of a good spy is not to get caught, but they do and then everyone huffs and puffs, throws out a few diplomats, and then gets back on with spying on each other.
