I'm looking at making my bench mobile (That way I'll be able to make it my own little mobile home when my wife finally loses patience with me!). I'd guess the bench and associated gubbins is somewhere around the 100-150kg mark, the floor is a relatively smooth concrete garage floor, but may soon see a change to interlocking garage floor tiles. Clearly I'll want the bench to be solid when the wheels are locked (my other tool cupboard bench manages this but I can't see a maker's mark on the wheel set), I'm happy that I can add truck locks/chocks if needed but I'd rather keep things as simple as possible from the get go. I've been looking at 75mm, but could equally accommodate 100mm diameter.

So, does anybody have any experience of and recommendations for particular products?

http://www.kregtool.eu/3-Dual-Locking-C ... dview.html - Double locking mechanism, sounds good - but there's no explanation of why, what is it? The central bolt fastening isn't what I'm after, but does the 'dual locking' offer any tangible benefit, and can it be found elsewhere? They're ~£40 online

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Rubber-Castor-C ... ed+castors , set of 4 for less than a tenner delivered

http://www.screwfix.com/p/rubber-tyres- ... of-4/41931 - <£30 delivered and easy to return if they're junk

Cheers, Kev

Edit: Meant to add that (within reason!) the cost isn't the driver so much as only going through the upheaval once

Personally i wouldn't bother with castors as even locking ones will give some movement to the bench. However needs must sometimes. Also i would go for the nylon wheels rather than rubber. Harder wearing for a start, plus i think the are rated for heavier loads.

These are what i have under all my machines. :)

Another vote for the Axi castors. I have both the 75 and 100mm versions on various benches, cupboards and trollies carrying well over 100kg with little problem.
The only (obvious) problem is that if you have your bench up against a wall with other stuff beside it.... getting at the back wheel brakes can be a bit awkward.

Hi

As said castors, even when locked, will allow the bench to move, (as the castors rotate under working loads). Rather than have to immobilise the workbench by running it into a wall or some other immovable surface why not attach wheels that can be raised off the floor to the bench sub frame ? That way, when the bench is in position and in use it will be standing on it's feet, not wheels.

Edited to add a link to an example of 'retractable' castors

Double locking castors will lock the swivel as well as the wheel rotation
Revvo and Tente are good
