Evening all, I am having a blonde moment with some calculations. say i want 100 linear metres of 100 by 25 sawn ash. how do I convert that into cubic feet ?

Just in case that you made a typing mistake........

The title is "Linear meters into cubic feet"......

1m³ = 35.31467 cubic feet
0.25m³ = 8.828667 cubic feet

That all depends on whether you are English or American Niki, this title is spelt correctly in the English Language but incorrect for the American version, the americans simplified some of the spelling.

I think Niki's point is this: are we converting into cubic metres (meters) or cubic feet (er, feet).

According to Google
1 cubic meter (sic) = 35.3146667 cubic feet

Hi Martin
I'm not talking about the spelling....The title is "Linear Meters into cubic feet" while on the post he is asking for cubic meters as you can see below...

(100M X 0.1M X 0.025M)= 0.25M³ X 35.31 = 8.83ft³ to two decimal places. As others have already said 35.31 is the conversion factor.

And as others have also suggested, there are online calculators out there you can use instead of pencil and paper, or pencil, paper and calculator.

Incidentally, a vaguely interesting but almost completely useless bit of information is that a board as you described, but 11.33M long X 100 mm X 25 mm = almost exactly 1 ft³ of material; so you could divide the metre length you need by 11.33 and get a good estimation of the cubic footage that way. Yes, I know it's pretty dumb, but I couldn't resist the fun of playing with some numbers just for the hell of it. Slainte.

Edited because I spotted a typo in the sum I put together.

For estimating purposes -
25mm is approx. 1"
100mm is approx. 4"
1m is approx. 40"
So 1 x 4 x 40 x 100 is 16000 cu in
Divide by 1728 to give 9.25 cu ft
Plus a wastage factor!

Everyone seems to work it out a dirrefent way!

Heres my way-

100x25=2500 (csa of timber)
2500x1000 = 2,500,500 (mm3 per metre)
2,500,000x100 = 250,000,000 (mm3 for 100 linear metres)

305x305x305 = 28,372,625 (gives the mm3 per cubic foot)

Then 250,000,000 / 28,372,625 = 8.82 cubic feet

Lots of didgits that way :lol:
