How do I send a direct message to a member?

Tap on the person's username and you'll be invited to start a conversation
Or tap on the envelope tap right and start from there

I had tried those steps but as it displayed a message "Allow anyone in the conversation to invite others" I didn't get the feeling it was a DM. Thanks for the info.

You mean a private message to another member, when you start the conversation it is up to you whether to tick the box to allow anyone in your conversation to invite others so leaving it unchecked means that it will only be between you and the member that YOU invited, that person cannot invite further recipients to the foray.
