Favourite tool broken and no longer made :(

Really is annoying. A couple of years ago I was wandering around B&Q and saw something on their clearance table. It was a MacAllister Palm Belt Sander and I think I got it for like £15. It's a really useful piece of kit - a decent-sized (not miniature like Proxxon) belt sander that can be...

    Buying wood on line

I think I have a valid complaint but maybe some people in here have a view. Had a request from a neighbour to make a couple of floating shelves from white beech. Each shelf to be 800 mm long X 160 mm deep X 25 mm thick (thickness necessary to match some existing shadow boxes on the wall and...

    The OxoBox

Friend of mine commissioned a storage box for Oxo cubes. (his wife's idea - not mine!) Had to be able to store 36 each of three different kinds of cube. So this is what he got. Panels are maple, "beams" are black walnut, lid is zebrano. I have no doubt it is the only one in existence! :P

    A strange sense of satisfaction

Or maybe it's a sense of "arrival" or "accomplishment"? Wifey asked me to make something not too complicated for the home and I was able to make it without any outside sourcing. I had the timber, the hardware, the tools necessary to size the timber, the finishing materials . . . everything was...

    Finally made a ZCI

Just spent a happy hour making a zero clearance insert for my TS. Made me wonder: why don't TS mfgrs include these with their units or at least offer them as an optional extra? (Such a handy little thing, as long as you remember to replace it with the original insert BEFORE tilting the blade...

    Best "house brands"?

I didn't realise it, but after it has been mentioned in a few threads I get the definite impression that Rutland's Dakota brand is pants. I'm looking to buy a new set of 1/2" router cuttrers and I don't want to spend the earth. Who's house brand is a safe bet? Axminster? Screwfix? Machine...

    On a serious note, folks

What's going to happen to your massive woodwrecking armoury when you drop off your twig? Will wifey be standing in the middle of all your gear wondering what size skip to order? Will you bore everyone into a coma by separately bequeathing each saw blade and drill punch, etc. to friends and...

    Fun Tool Game

How many badges does Makita have?

Looking for a new light-duty 12 or 14 V drill driver. Was interested in the Makita https://www.lawson-his.co.uk/scripts/de ... duct=29428 but after some further googling I came across this "budget" brand from Makita sold through Screwfix http://www.screwfix.com/prods/83288/Pow ...

    A suggestion for space-starved shops

I got tired of having to shift things from one spot to another every time I needed some space for assembly or cleaning/repairing a machine, etc. So I looked around the shop and realized there was no way to put in any more bench space - or was there? I started looking vertical instead of...

    Two new additions

I am presently "between projects" so I'm taking the opportunity to play with my shop layout. In doing so I found that I actually had some spare room - so I quickly filled it with this bobbin sander and this scroll saw (A woodworking shop abhores empty space. ) They are both just...

    Dado blades available

For all those who have been looking for stacked dado heads - here's one reputable UK source. The price is ridiculous, but they are obtainable. http://www.rutlands.co.uk/power-tools-& ... h-dado-set

Another stab at getting it right (PIC)

I've made a diversion now from boxes to things that can contain an integral clock. This desk pen holder is made from burry ash and black walnut. The pen trumpets are gold plated. Once again the camera angle makes it look a little wonky - but I assure you it isn't. Everything is stone dead...

    Fox vs Woodstar

Greetings to the Group I am thinking of buying this little spindle moulder for light moulding and shaping duties. http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/produ ... le-moulder I was considering its big brother http://www.dm-tools.co.uk/product.php/s ... sn/WDSBS52 but the big price difference more...

An incredibly dumb question regarding bench planer

I got one of these http://www.axminster.co.uk/product.asp? ... =1&jump=44 You may recall I had a question about snipe which started occurring after I put in a new set of blades. I made a little jig with plywood and rare earth magnets and re-inserted the blades. Now I have snipe AND chatter...

Opinions sought re: drum sanding options

I think I'm going to be getting more into "shaped" and curved projects (but not turned) as opposed to flat box-like stuff. My sanding needs are therefore going to be more demanding than my current ROS, OS, bench belt/disc, palm belt. I'll need to be able to work on rounded inside curves, for...

What I think of this forum

I recently started a thread which featured a little desk clock I made. Some people commented favourably - a couple weren't wildly enthusiastic. To both groups I say . . . THANK YOU! My experience in other WW forums has been that everyone is so very careful not to comment negatively about the...

    Something whimsical

Had some spare utili and zebrano laying around and it kinda turned into this. (I know the numbers look crooked in the pic but that's the camera angle. Really!) This is one project where I just let myself be driven by impulse and a Why not? attitude. I found out that working free-form is...

If you save it long enough . . .

I have had one of these (earlier version) for like 15+ years. http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/imag ... 651&sr=8-1 I never used it because it was such an aggressive, vicious little pipper. (Put it anywhere near a piece of wood and it was half way through before you could pull it back.) So...

    Looking for pen holder(s)

Hey, Gang I have some clocks movements I bought a while ago and I have saved for "just the right project". I now want to make a desk set (clock & pen/pencil holders). But where do I go to find the little holders to attach to the base - and the pens and pencils? And preferably not something...
