Filler and how to stain it match the wood

A lot of furniture restorers use coloured wax to fill in blemishes and cracks. The idea is to finish the piece and them use a wax crayon ( for want of a better word ) either rubbed in or melted in using a soldering iron to drip wax into the blemish ,the colour of the wax needs to be a good match...

    extraction measurements

Mike I would be tempted to take measurements all over the shop, particularly over the top of dust producing machines, remember the faster the smoke the more air velocity,so you don't have to work out the calcs. I forgot to mention why the dark and torch ,it is to see the smoke better. If you can...

    extraction measurements

This is the method we used to use in the mines to measure airflow if we didn't have an anemometer with us. We measured the cross sectional area of the tunnel or (the width and height of your workshop). This gave us a figure in square metres m2.We then set up a measured length say 1 metre along...

    recommended reading list

This is one that I'm sure Philly and Alf have.In my opinion it is one of the best resources for collectors and restorers of old planes and other tools. The only down side is the fact that it is published in the States ,but if you want to know how to fettle planes and sharpen blades and...

Shopping for hand tools in Sheffield

David and Scrit, unfortunately the old tool shop in Highfield Road Doncaster closed recently after over 20 years in business,a real shame as I used to make a pilgrimage there every Saturday for about 5 years. They had some great stuff in and it was the ideal place for a collector. They are still...

Preston went bust in the 1930,s and they aren't making any more of them .I usually reach for one(sorry! collector on the loose) of mine first when I need to shave spokes ,nice to look at and nice to use.The Stanley 53 is also a nice piece of kit ( don't ask I will only fib ). Oak for a conservatory

They used to build ships out of oak (european oak)and then try to blast holes in them with cannon balls so I guess a conservatory might just fit the bill, beware of sap wood though like my colleague states it rots and is prone to woodworm attack.

    Why does Norm do it???

I still have to use stains if I am restoring furniture, dark was the fashion for hundreds of years so dark is what I do. I have tried to apply a scientific approach but I honestly believe good staining is a dark art,I am not prepared to sell my soul to the devil to perfect the art of turning...
