Emir Workbench - how much is a good price if I sell?

Hi all, How much do you think would be a reasonable amount to ask for my workbench? It's an ex-college bench so been well used but in perfect working order. Also got various dogs for it as you can see from attached pics. More pics here: https://goo.gl/photos/aN373sZwZCQoRiPY9 Thanks, Jonny

    Finish for ash shelf

I've not got much of an idea about woodworking, and even less about finishing! So, what would a good finish (if any) be for an ash shelf (see http://thickastwoshortplanks.blogspot.co.uk/2012/08/floating-ash-shelf-project.html? I've read that danish oil will give it a 'orrible yellow colour...

    Emir Workbench

I have an (old?) Emir workbench I picked up from a college clearout . As you can imagine is been pretty knocked about with panel pins, nails, glue and who knows what else attached to the worktop, but it is sounder than anything I was going to build at my novice stage! Pics here...

    Sawing straight

Hi all, I'm slowly practising my hand tool techniques and thought I was beginning to see progress at sawing in a straight line, until last night... I've got a mixture of Japanese pull saws and traditional western back saws and with shorter cuts I've been pretty happy with what I've...

Dust extraction if only hand tools???

Happy new year all! I currently only use hand tools* for my woodworking (which is purely hobby based). What precautions should I be taking with wood dust? Do I need a full extraction system or will dust masks suffice? Cheers, Jonny * I do use battery and bench drills from time to time.

    Rip or crosscut?

Recently picked up three old(ish) saws off ebay to have a go at sharpening by hand. They weren't expensive so its more about using them to practice on. So, what have I ended up with?: I think this is a crosscut (its 22" long, 9-10 tpi): I think this is a rip (26" long, 7 tpi): And I think...

    Wooden plane questions

Hi, Picked up this plane on ebay as I was after a jointer to add to my no.4 and no. 5 Bailey style, but thought I'd try a wooden one: After eventually managing to get the blade out and sharpen/hone it (as was pretty dull), when it came to setting it up I ran into a couple of issues...

    Finish for kids toys

Should hopefully be a simple one... What is a suitable finish to apply to some wooden childrens toys (various animal shapes)? They're made out of beech and I've got a little 'un who will no doubt put them straight in his mouth when he picks them up! Or, should I not apply a finish at...

    Bargain Workbench?

Hi, Now I was going to build my own bench but I just couldn't turn down this which I came across on ebay and was just down the road: Picked it up for less than it would have cost me for the materials to build a basic one out of softwood. Its from a closed down college so well used and...

What type of wood is this?

Hi, Anyone any idea what type of wood this is? My idea is mahogany but as a newbie I maybe way off! If it helps the wood came from a an old (victorian?) window frame a mate had in a skip. Cheers, Jonny Sent from my Nexus S using Tapatalk

    First attempt at freehand sharpening!

Hi, I was going to buy one of the eclipse type sharpening jigs from Axminster yesterday as I thought it was what I 'needed', but after seeing all the multitude of sharpening implements in the nice shiny Axminster store I got the feeling that I was being sucked down a (expensive!) road I didn't...

    Mortise Chisel Sharpening

Hi, Without re-opening (I've seen the previous posts!) the can of worms that is 'sharpening', do you sharpen/hone mortise chisels using the same method you would for bevel edged chisels i.e. at 25deg then 30deg for the micro bevel? Cheers, Jonny P.S. If you're interested, I'm going down the...

What hand saws does this beginner need

Hi, Nearly got my basic woodworking tool collection complete (e.g. basic hand tools, planes, cramps, measuring tools etc), but just need to complete it with hand saws so that I can start the numerous projects I've got lined up. So having looked through the Axminister catelogue and done the...

    Simple Sawhorse

Hi, I had the idea this weekend of building a couple of sawhorses thinking that this would be a relatively simple exercise... Now either I'm being a bit of a dunce or making a sawhorse isn't quite as simple as I first thought! :? I found this old post on the forum...

    Draper power tools

Hi, Not that I'm really in the market for power tools yet (not built my bench yet!), my local general store has Draper power tools. Are they actually any good as the prices seemed quite cheap - £50 to £80 for routers, mitre saws, jig saws etc. Cheers, Jonny

    Some questions about first workbench

Hi, I'm in the process of planning a very simple, first, workbench as my first (ever!) woodworking project. I'm probably going to go for a simple MDF/hardboard top to keep things nice and simple, with two vices front left and on the end using cast iron woodworking Record style. My questions...

Glue overload! Which glue do I need?

Hi, I'm about to start work on building my first woodworking bench and have decided to base it on the bob and dave design that I found in the following forum post https://www.ukworkshop.co.uk/forums/what-could-u-make-a-workbench-out-of-for-little-t45094.html The parts list on the plan lists...

    Timber to practice on

My first post so hi to all :D I'm in the process of turning my garage into a 'hobby' workshop for woodworking (its more of a general DIY'ers garage at the moment). My first project will be to build a woodworking bench for which I've found some good posts on this forum for ideas. I've been...
