Hi All,
not posted for long time after some medical problems, feel a bit sheepish posting just to ask a question so apologies if it upsets anyone
I have been asked to alter a staircase for someone, basically they want to turn a pine staircase into an oak one by covering the treads and risers in oak and cutting of newels down to the sq section and then joining on an oak newel and fitting new oak handrail, baserail and spindles.
What worries me is the joint in the newels not sure whether to use a peg, a zipbolt newel fastener or if either will be strong enough?
Not much experience with staircases am more of a built ins and fitted furniture man but I do like a challenge!
Any thoughts would be gratefully received also wondering if anyone has used the tread/riser kits and if they had any problems.
Thanks in advance,
Gavin

No problem that is what the forum is for.
The Newel and handrail, I use the Zipbolts.
The treads are difficult as by cladding them unless you do the hall and landing as well you end up with uneven steps which is not permitted. Eg if you add 20mm to the first step it gains 20mm against the floor. The last tread before the landing looses 20mm. So the first is +20 the intermediate steps stay as they were and the last step is -20

Hi
Thanks to PAC I did mention that to the client and it's still under discussion I think originally they were going to do the work themselves but decided against it but if I do it I will make sure that is discussed and make it clear they need to raise the floor in the hall as well as the landing.
Thanks Doug I had not thought of that possibility I will check out the link and see what the client thinks.
Many thanks
Gavin

I over clad an over cladding of a Victorian staircase, that a previous "carpenter" made a hash off. It was lots of hard work as the staircase was all over the place, but the results where pretty good. The client was pleased!
