Silverline new range

Do Silverline actually make their own products or are they just branded stuff they buy in? If they buy it in that could explain why some of their products are OK and others are disappointing.

I think they're just merchants, having gear made with their own label. Their cheap router I have is identical to one of the Drapers and some clamps appear the same as other brands. The biscuit jointer has worked well for a couple of years, as has the 18G nailer. Having said that, if I needed gear for daily trade use, I would go for better brand but for "retired" occasional hobby use, it's OK - at the price.

P.S. It would be good to see stockists of more US gear here. For instance, I needed a couple of plastic T strips for Leigh dovetail jig. Axminster no stock and 3 months delivery, Highland Woodworking ex stock but $33 postage + duty etc.

Silverline products are something I try to avoid. All the clamps I have had from Silverline have failed or broken. Cheap, but you always get what you pay for.

Their heavy duty F clamps are the one Silverline thing I have kept. They are excellent, really beefy casting/forging on the jaws and the handles are really grippy.

Am I the only person that hates paper catalogues?

Festools 2018 catalog has just dropped through the letter box (presumably because I have the Domino) and nearly killed the dog as it dropped. It is a real rainforest murderer. Going straight in the recycling - website is much more up to date...

I used to think this a long time ago (parental influence) but quite early on questioned it based on the occasional exception I spotted.

Now see, IMO you do tend to get exactly what you paid for with cake! And ice cream. And chocolate!

Advanced technology would be my guess. Specifically, metallurgy. These days it's a lot cheaper to make steel better than was available in the heyday of sheffield steel. So even the lowest dregs can be better than the average was in those days.

As to why stanley and co. aren't doing this... well, your guess about the marketing department is as good as mine I suspect.
