There's more time wasted and total b*ll*x talked about chisel "prepping" than almost any other woodworking subject! Ignore it all!

By fettling i meant just a quick pass on the back on 800 grit wet and dry paper to get the U shape that everyone mention and a quick hone on the bevel (it had some sort of coating on top) this was quickly removed and didn't even use my 1500 grit paper and no stropping either as got no compound yet, but now understand what a sharp chisel mean and the difference it makes.

also already cut myself with them :p , just a scab though.
