Quite right, and I am certainly not against progress.
I have a cnc machine and use 3d design software. But it doesn't mean that the chisel has become obsolete.

Yeah and you certainly cannot risk dropping an expensive smartphone from your horse.

I pay for nearly everything with card. The only thing I want to pay cash is in pubs, it is just to easy to be ripped off. When contact less first came out I used it a couple of times in various pubs and asked for the receipt. There were quite a few times where they "accidentally" rang up an extra pint.

I can just imagine it in the wood yard show off builder getting his gold and diamond encrusted phone out to make you think he is busy and loaded instead of a roll of twenties 😃

So when you are coming to retirement at 79 you will recieve a smart phone from the DWP and free wi fi with 20 gig a month so you can access your monthly credits . Now there something to look forward to

There are some non EU countries in Europe that use the Euro for large purchases like houses cars etc and the countries own currency for smaller stuff.

I could see us doing the opposite if we get rid of physical money. Some people will want to use the the Euro cash instead. But then a Euro bank account will be useful. But then the Euro could start becoming attractive for non cash transactions.

By then it will be somehow integrated into our dna or a chip in our hands or something, at least it would be harder to lose.
In China they are already biometrically scanning everyone all the time.
I wonder how that works for identical twins ?

I haven't a smartphone. I refuse to pay dearly for something I don't need. I use a cheapie Tesco pay as you go (£5 since February) mainly for ID verification for Ebay and Amazon. I accept I'm probably unusual, though.
With you on that no smartphone gifgaff sim on old phone top up very three months or so £6

Was near Screwfix today and remembered I need some 3" stainless steel screws for a job this week so popped in. There seemed to be a big queue, I noticed the new tablets which weren't working, turned out they were having problems with their full system hence the big queue. I had my impatient 10yr old with me so we nipped next door to Toolstation who I found out only do SS screws up to 50mm long and only had 40mm in stock anyway. Came away empty handed.

I do normally click and collect and find that works well.

Just thinking ........I appear to be lucky, down at the tail end. Within six or seven miles we've two specialist paint suppliers, two SF's two TS's, a B&Q, a TP, a Wickes, a Bradford's, an MKM, two Jewsons and five good independents.
The beauty of living on a trading estate..lol

You probably have a life and are aware of your surroundings, there is nothing smart about these phones that so many people find so addictive that they spend their lives staring at, not noticing the car they are about to walk out in front of or their dog has pulled their kid in a pushchair into the road.

The biggest reason for getting rid of cash is because the tax office can be in full control, all taxes & vat is paid whereas in the days of cash was king you could get better prices for paying in cash.

No cash = not being robbed, either as an individual or the poor person who has to drop the takings off at the bank.
No cash = less mistakes by staff
No cash = less cost for the businesses
No cash = faster checkout.
No cash = less fraud
No cash = end of black economy…..yep everyone should pay taxes and contribute
No cash = positive proof you bought something, exactly where and when
No cash = less crime

Roll on No cash, Im sure some will poke holes in the realities on a No cash society. Finland is almost there, when I ran a company there it was brilliant. Never ever took cash, never needed it.

The luddites hated progress too……
I agree with much of that but not the first two, people are getting robbed via contact-less cards being scanned in the street, I have no idea how that is done without leaving an obvious trail but it happened to a waitress I was talking to yesterday - first time I have heard someone say it happened to them rather than it could happen. Point two human error isn't going away any time soon it will just happen at another point in the chain

Dropped one from the top of a radio mast once - just after the boss said we are not ensuring then as it costs to much - it landed on concrete, there are a lot of bits in an I-Phone some really small.

Although irritating at times my bank (Halifax) forces me to use my pin after so many contactless transactions, especially if they are in fairly rapid succession. The latest scam is where your phone and card are nicked then large purchases can be made by using another phone to video your mobile as the security code is sent via text. As long as your phone is on the code is apparently momentarily displayed over the blank screen. I've just been told this and need to find out how to disable it.
