I really appreciate all the advice here.
I have put on a 4 tpi blade.
Re-adjusted everything again and it cuts much better.
Theory about too fine blade seems to hold up, I obviously wasn't using the correct tool for the job! Those fewer 2 teeth make a great difference (I didn't realise).
Just cut a trial tennon on a piece of 100mm scrap softwood (by eye, without fence) and it cut straight too.
I'll still call Ian though and sort out a new blade.

Ian does a blade with every other tooth with no set on it (and therefore that tooth does not cut at all). It's sole purpose is to take away extra sawdust. I can't remember what name Ian give to these but they are very fast indeed.
The golden rule of at least three teeth in the work and as few more as possible does mean that you need to keep a few different blade pitches in stock but will give you best performance
