Obviously you need an angle grinder, but what craftsperson doesnt have one of them.
These angle grinder stands cost only 20 quid and are a godsend. I'd a load of brass tubing to cut into specific sized sections. - Try cutting that stuff straight by hand ....Nightmare.
Bought this and breezed through all the cuts, all square and accurate.

Brilliant! I think I’ll be getting me one of those.

Honestly, I cant rate it highly enough. 15 or so brass rings to cut, and by hand even with a new blade in the hacksaw it took 10mins about to cut one, and the results were i've hidden it so nobody ever sees what a pigs ear i made of it

But after getting the stand, and to be honest i was a bit dubious at first given how cheap it was, and spent a wee bit of time adjusting it for accuracy, I basically was cutting each ring in about 15 seconds, all perfectly square.
I needed to file off a bit of burr, but thats all that was needed, which you would do anyway if cut with a hacksaw.

So I couldn't decide if this was worthy of posting or not but it's the only thing I've made recently. my daughter wanted a very specific sized boot/shoe/niknak rack, and was in Ikea - looking at something and of course I pipe up with how much?!?! I could make something exactly as you want... Well it cost me more than she was going to spend, and now spent nowt as well...but I'm fairly happy with it and no screws - it's all wood...

PS. that's just where I took the photo's not where it's destined to live!

I bought an an angle grinder to sit in one permanently - they're fiddly to set up accurately. Brilliant, though, for what they cost. Mine came from Lidl.

So while I wait for the lower half of my supersize female figurine to settle into what position it wants I rounded off another piece of green Ash and added to the growing collection of blanks, then I mounted a crotch of something that I picked up whilst at my tree surgeons yard last week, not sure what wood it is but it turned very nicely, it's old enough to be very dry and weighed next to nothing. You can't really see in the pics but there are tiny separations running through the grain that look like cracks as well as a few bug tracks between the bark and wood.

That is really nice.

Just a frivolous joust - is turning the most wasteful woodworking method? The ratio of the raw material to finished piece is massive.

I guess that's one way to look at it, any offcuts too small to turn and bigger than chip/shaving get kept for the fire pit, shavings, chips and dust get bagged up and I have a few people that use it for their allotments and gardens.

Almost as bad as the local timber cladding company who were machining 1" pine down to 1/4" just for the horses bedding. As bedding out stripped cladding winter before last.....

Ooooh, me back!

A bit of framing....I need to do an NVQ3 in Heritage skills-Wood Occupations for a gold CSCS card, so I chopped a frame in the yard yesterday.

It's going in the hall opposite this one and will be walled up with mud bricks laid in lime.

Joints came out alright too, even though I'm out of practice......Should be ok once the pin is banged in.

What's the offset between the two holes. 1/8"??
Guess it depends on the size of timbers??
