Strong easterly winds brought surfers from all over the S.W to Paignton beach, best surf conditions I have seen apart from when gales are in force.

Is that you riding those waves DW?

No, but the next morning I was on the telephone to friends in Hawaii and got an invitation to return. Like everything American even their waves are higher ,around 8 Mtrs. Higher.

But insurance would have us beat.

They tell me they can bury you 6ft under the sand if you don't get it right, so I was happy watching, also if you miss the top of the Island, next stop is California . (homer)

Awesome.

A considerable number of years ago I just happened to be a student in Plymouth which is very well placed to access pretty much most of Britain's best surfing beaches. Many's the time us students would catch early tides and miss lectures when we heard Bigbury Bay was working or the Newquay beaches etc.

On one occasion in a tiny little village just on the Cornwall side of the bridge, we were surfing Portwrinkle which is not so much a beach as a dangerous rocky mix of pebbles boulders and tonking great rocks. There's a channel between the rocks wide enough to surf so off we went. My pal had recently bought this whizzy short board with flash graphics all over it and duly applied his bar of pineapple Mr Zogg's sex wax.

He surfed down a particularly steep wave only to see the beach appear in front of the wave....his brand new board stuck nose first in the beach and he followed through, impaling himself on the dovetail stern end of the board. We knew it was a hospital job when we saw the blood oozing from the two puncture wounds in his wetsuit. That's not a good look!

Anyway, he was fine after several stitches, no deep damage but I do recall taking the micky out of him for being such a whimp for a good 6 months after....as friends do of course!

So......what would happen to you on one of those big Hawaiian jobs if something goes wrong I daren't even imagine :)

From what my stepdaughter tells me(she's just moved to Hawaii) there's a lot of coral there which can be dangerous for surfers.

Why? Does it jump up and eat them? Or could it be that the surfers are dangerous for the coral

Loads of the trees alongside the roads here in France have been deemed dangerous. Especially at about 4 in the morning when people are driving home after a nice evening sumping wine. Those trees just jump out and clout the cars. Evil I say, evil   The biggest problem is that they are threatening to cut them down (hammer) (hammer)

But did you see the whales instead?
No, saw the inside of a bar instead.

Perhaps you should have crossed over the big Island named Hawaii.

We did a short trip to Hawaii. This was September 1990, six months after Kilauea errupted, it was amazing to see the lave tubes across the road and the sea steaming as magma still flowed.

Nurseries, we parked on that road and the park rangers advised us all to leave, next morning the lava was around 600mm deep and would not have been able to drive off if I had stayed.

Our friends cannot close any of their internal doors either owing to quakes.
