The results are in....

Hi Nev,
Here's the results -

1. Heatherw - A nicely shaped box with a lid that reflects the shape of the box. The finial was simple and in proportion with the box.
2. Sheptonphil - A classic shape enhanced with the different wood for foot, finial and inlay ring.
3. Dennisk - Nicely made and an interesting detail under the lid for added appeal.
4. Nev - Nice contrast between the different wood and a well turned finial
5. Melindadd - I liked how the wenge echoed the darkness of the spalting lines.

Well done to all those who had a go.

Cheers

Paul

Well done Heather =D> and I would also like to add a thanks to all those that managed to get an entry in this month. =D>

Ooo, that was quick!

Very surprised and pleased, I also concur, the entries were so different that it would have been like judging 5 separate competitions. Lots of material there for later plagiarism. Would someone like to detail the steps involved in inlaying a separate ring of wood round the lid? I can't figure it out. Do you do it after you have the basic shape, before or after hollowing....

Thanks Nev for organising and Paul for judging. It's good to have something completely different to look forward to every month, to use the braincells on.

.

I'm sure there are other methods but the way i do it is effectively a mortice (recess) and tenon (i think thats the correct term?) ...
A thousand words etc..

Do the 'ring' first - glue chuck your timber , width of 'ring ' plus say 10mm and turn to slightly oversize. reduce front face to tenon of appropriate size* . part off.

now turn the main body of the box to oversize, square the face of the 'body' and then make a recess in the top, in this case about 15mm deep, to accept the tenon you just turned, to a snug fit but with enough room for glue. once you're happy with the fit apply glue to faces and stick together. use the tailstock to apply pressure while it dries.
then once dry turn another recess in the ring to accept your lid tenon and away you go.

cindy drozdas fab finial box dvd is where i got the method from and I'm sure there is a you tube video showing how to do it but i cannot find it at the mo but did find the instruction sheet to accompany it...

Excellent entries again this month, only just looked and saw the result was early this month.

Congrats to Heather and every entrant, I really enjoyed this challenge and the missus is Over the moon with the box.

Only difference to Nev's method was to only use the tenon part of the contrast wood to fit into a mortice in the box top. I had the rough shape of slightly curved end, by using a parting tool and removing the mortice to 15mm straight sided and plugging it with a piece of contrast wood, diameter of mortice x 17mm it left it just proud of the surface but there was no need to level the top. Remake the rough shape with the contrast wood in place, then make the opening in the top with recess for lid as if it was one piece.

Roll on next month..

Thanks to Nev for your doggedness in running the comps and the judges, can't be easy

Phil
