January Challenge 2013

The challenge is open to any and every registered UKW user. You must however sign up first (only need be done once) to get your name on the scoreboard.

An Acorn Box (click title for clues)

That is a lidded box in the shape of an acorn.

New work please.

any size.

any wood.

Texturing and or colouring acceptable on the 'lid'.

The box/lid can be either a push fit or threaded.


This months judge will be Paul Hannaby

Once you have completed your entry, please go to the scoreboard and mark your entry as ready. Then wait patiently til the end of the month (27th) when a new thread will be opened titled 'Post your entries here.' this thread will remain open for 2 days during which time you upload the required pics of your entry.

Please post 3 or 4 images of your work / entry as follows...

1 showing assembled box side view
1 showing inside the box and lid
1 showing side view of the "male" spigot / thread section
1 optional photo showing any other feature you think might be of interest

Image size please use image size 640 x 480 0.3 mp, same previous months

Please state wood type if known, dimensions and a little about how you made it and what tools and finish you used ( this helps the judge )

Entry’s to be uploaded from 10pm on 27th January up until 10pm on the 29th January.
After this time the thread will be locked for Judging
Results will be given on or before 31 January

Any entry's that are outside the rules and requirements will not be judged
The Judges decision is final ( Any negative comments re judging must be via PM only and not on the open forum )
NO Critique or comments on any work until February Please, After the Judging and results.

Any question regarding requirements or if any hints and tips are required please post in this thread.

I'll start us off...

IF I dont have a chuck , whats the best way to go about making a box ?

can different woods be used?
does it have to stand up?
and is carving aloud ?

maybe turn one half as much as possible using a face plate, then still using the face plate make a jam chuck to finish it..... then do the same with the other side of the box.... checking it's a good tight fit on the first half turned?

only if you hold it upside down!
The cap and stalk can be textured/carved/coloured/abused but not the nut please. (This way there is at least a part of it that needs to be finished 'cleanly', no hiding of toolmarks etc :wink: )

q. I take it we can present either the nut or the capula as the lid of our box?

a. turn well over length, and a little over diameter, between centres and part off as appropriate, possibly finishing the last bit of the seperation of the lathe with a saw remount the pieces on screw chucks using the marked centres and take it from there - don't use too big a screw and you should be able to re-use the holes with your centres later in the process.

I would definitely like to have a go at this, tho i've never made a box before so may not make it to the finishing line. There's only one way to learn, .
