Good Luck

I'll start us off...

IF I dont have a chuck , whats the best way to go about making a box ?

can different woods be used?
does it have to stand up?
and is carving aloud ?

maybe turn one half as much as possible using a face plate, then still using the face plate make a jam chuck to finish it..... then do the same with the other side of the box.... checking it's a good tight fit on the first half turned?

hope that makes some sense :? im no expert !

Are there any restrictions regarding the dimensions of the box?

Also are laminations allowed?

With a bit of luck I will be entering a few this year :)

Greg

only if you hold it upside down!
The cap and stalk can be textured/carved/coloured/abused but not the nut please. (This way there is at least a part of it that needs to be finished 'cleanly', no hiding of toolmarks etc  )

q. I take it we can present either the nut or the capula as the lid of our box?

a. turn well over length, and a little over diameter, between centres and part off as appropriate, possibly finishing the last bit of the seperation of the lathe with a saw :D remount the pieces on screw chucks using the marked centres and take it from there - don't use too big a screw and you should be able to re-use the holes with your centres later in the process.

It's going to look a bit funny with the stalk coming out of the bottom of the box!!

I would definitely like to have a go at this, tho i've never made a box before so may not make it to the finishing line. There's only one way to learn, .
