I listened to this on the radio earlier today and apparently prison population has been stable for a few years and that we have over 7000 places more than we need.

More than 100 rapists have been let off with a police caution, it was revealed yesterday. The 111 cases included 66 incidents of child rape.
The extent to which police forces have handed cautions to rapists, whose crime carries a maximum sentence of life in jail, was made public as Justice Secretary Jack Straw announced a full-scale review of the system of punishing crime with cautions and on-the-spot fines.

Not sure when this report was from but Jack Straw isn't the Justice secretary and hasn't been since May 2010.

Agree, has anyone on UKW ever met a judge :?: I ask because you never see them on TV, no one knows where they live, they get a chauffer driven car and special houses on their circuit (Heaven forbid that any judge would have to stay in a hotel  )
And they spend so much time reading the law and analysing every little word and comma and hyphen and trying to interpet it in a way which will enhance their career. It's time our judiciary got out in the community instead of living in their isolated glory and thinking what clever fellows they are.
