Well, I finally saw the light :? An angle poise one. I have had the idea of making one for ages, but the heat caused by any incandescing bulb would destroy a wooden shade quick time. So when the LEDs appeared and a little mains golf ball LED was affordable I thought what the hell.

The base is designed to take 2 external HDDs, 3 1/2" jobbies with the cables going out the back and is marine ply, or at least what the French call marine? the base swivel and arms are oak, the shade is spalted beach. It took an age to make because I had to work out just how it would go together, but I like it, as does SWMBO.

The top arm was done by sticking two lengths of oak together with double sided tape and turning them to round. Splitting them and hey presto, two bits-a-wood 8)

It gives a lovely light and just from a 3.8 watt bulb that does not get hot..

I want to make one about 4 foot high, floor standing, but it may be a while, so don't hold yer breath?

Nice, I've been thinking about making a floor standing one for ages but can't work out how the shade part attaches to the top arm. Is that a specialist fitting designed for that? Hard to tell from the picture.

Thank you folks.

The shade fitting is just turned so that it fits onto the normal place where a bought shade would fit. In this case the fitting comes into 3 parts with about a 3/8" bit between the front fitting, which is porcelane, and the rear. A bit of a cow to put it together until I hit on using a pair of snipe nose pliers. The other fitting I have is more standard and if I use it the shade will be turned to fit like any normal jobbie.

I may well fit a GU10 type fitting in there which could be fun  but there will be a lot more light. One of the problems with French houses is that they don't like ceiling lights and have uplighters and all sorts. very odd.

Just a quick aside. When we first moved in to this house we couldn't work out where the fittings were for the bedroom lights. Normal switch just inside the door, but where the hell was the light fitting??? We eventually discovered that it's one of the wall sockets. exactly the same as the others but switched from the switch by the bleedin door! You could quite easily plug a 5 Kw heater into a light circuit! Probably only once though? I had better not get started on French electrics.

Back on thread. I should have made the contact area on the movable arms a bit bigger. You either have to be a sumo wrestler or get a pair of pliers to tighten the wing nuts enough to stop the arms collapsing forward at itmes.

I didn't phrase that very well, I meant how is the metal light fitting attached to the arm with the wing nut

Have you thought about a split spring washer in the joints, it may make them hold position better
