Posted recently about a problem with my grinder which despite much help from Pete Maddox I have not yet quite solved. Unfortunately I have been unable to find the exact size of capacitor to replace the duff one despite many searches on ebay, Maplins and RS.
The capacitor I need is square, with small size spade connectors and 2.5uF. All the capacitors of that uF are round and have larger size spade connectors and usually are too big to fit into the grinder base. The only square ones ( small enough to fit in the space) with the right size spade connectors are usually of much larger capacitance. The nearest I can get to my size is 5.0 uF.
I don't really understand that much about electronics but could I replace my 2.5 uF with a 5.0 uF without causing damage? Would it even work? Would any of you wise men be able to guide me? Bear in mind that without a capacitor its just a lump of metal taking up bench space at the moment. Thanks in advance.

No doubling the design value is not the way to go. Can you post the dimensions of the old capacitor and those of the available void. A photo of the markings on the old one if legible would also be useful.

Please excuse the possibly dumb question, Does the capacitor have to be inside the motor housing?
Many I have seen have been fixed to the outside of a motor, surely a self tapper or similar fixing to the rear would suffice?
Regards Rodders

Rodders has a valid point, I did exactly that with my drill-press.

That Amazon one that NazNomad linked looks like it would work, and you could use terminal blocks to connect it.

Pete

p.s its Maddex not Maddox  :D

my apologies to all if it seems that i have lost interest in this but I have been away and been unable to follow the thread. I shall get back to it soon and post details of the original capacitor. Just a point to note the capacitor does have to be on the inside of the housing and the space is quite limited.

The replacement for my belt and disk sander was too big to go into the motor housing so I fixed it to another part of the machine and used longer leads.
