I modified the design cut a new lid to replace the one I cremated. The whole thing hasn't come out as well as expected, but it is okay for my first ebonizing project.

What exactly is it you are not satisfied with, is it the dominance of the wood grain?

Thinking along the lines of lacquered boxes with similar inlays where the shiny black surround emphasises the colours and form of the design without the textured distraction.
 
I think you are spot on with your observations, Chas. I think I need to do a bit of research into creating a shiny lacquered finish before I do another one.
