I'm pricing up a small job to repair and refurbish a playground slide and climbing frame for a local nursary. I need to change the climbing frame to something that isn't easily climbable so I thought about changing to vertical slats insead of horizontal ones so it is more of a play structure. I also need to build a new set of steps to for the slide as the original ones were nicked.

I was thinking of keeping the cost of labour and timber processing down by constructing out of decking boards.

What finish should I use on the cut ends and edges of the boards to give it some reasonable degree of protection and be child friendly?

I also need to keep the bottom end of the steps off the ground with something cheap and easy. Currently the ground is uneven dirt and worn out grass. No rubberised play mats here, its either rock hard dry dirt or mud.
