There is one in each large room of the property (bedrooms and lounge). They're painted over, so clearly not used. But they stick out a mile and I'd like to remove them if I can.

I did open it up but forgot to take a picture. There was quite a bit inside, including a lot of insulation and it's MDF I believe, so I'm guessing it's not a heater.

Will take a picture of inside when I get back. And some more of the wiring
 
It is a vent. There will be two 100mm (ish) pipes through the wall to outside and a centrifugal fan. I think they were fitted in the 1960's when secondary double glazing for noise proofing was added to the building. I removed some in a house which i recently renovated.
