    Waterstone

I have just dug out my waterstone, it's a 1000/8000 graded stone. I haven't used it for a while and embrassingly I have forgotten which side is which as both look and feel as smooth as the other. How can I find out which is the 1000 graded side and which is the other?

    Lime tree timber

I've spent ages trying to find a wood merchants that sells off cuts of wood and gave up. After scrounging I found a big lump of trunk cut from what looks like a Lime tree. Is wood from this tree workable? I only need to put a couple of mortises in it. It is very fresh so at the moment a little soft.

    Outdoor protection

I'm constructing something that will be kept outside and is put together with mainly lap joints which are screwed together. I was wondering should I varnish the wood that overlaps or can I use woodglue and would that provide enough protection against rain and the outdoor elements?

    Repair cracks and splits

    Project sources?

    Planning dovetails

Some of my dovetails butt out too far and I need to shorten them. Whats the best way to do it? I know if I try and plane them it will probably split the wood.

    Rebate plane

I've just got hold of one of these but dont know who to adjust it? The large screw holds the blade it which obviously loosens to allow the raising and lower of it but theres also a smaller screw, plus the an adjustment lever. I find that my adjustments just seem to make the blade come loose and...

    Wood recommendations

As Im just starting out I've been kind of taught to use pine due to its cheapness and softness. Trouble is I've found it far too soft for things like dovetailing etc and I just wondered if someone could tell me of a wood that is as cheap as pine but a little tougher. I guess Im talking about...

    Adjusting Dovetails

My sawing/marking was a bit poor and some of the tails are a little wide, stopping the joint from fitting snuggly. Whats the best technique for reducing the size of the tails slightly?

    Using a Stanley Honing guide

I was given a Stanley Honing guide but no instructions. On the back it shows the length of blade that should be extruding from it but I cant figure out whether the length is measured from the top piece of the guide or the section on the underneath.(??)

    Bad wood??

I've been 'trying' to produce a dovetail joint using bits of pine but Im noticing the wood is cracking and spliting along the surface almost as if it was verneered(?) Looking across the end of section I've cut the wood seems as if its very dry and and again as if its made of many 'veneers', for...

    Using handsaws

Hi all. I've been woodworking on and off for a couple of years now but there's one thing I still haven't mastered and that's sawing straight(!!!) Its really frustrating and I just cant seem to get it. Its especially shows when trying to cut tenons. Can anyone offer any magic tips that don't...
