    3ph machinery auction

I was sent details of this auction. Kit up in Yorkshire, some of it looks quite tasty, if perhaps a bit big for my workshop. The mislabelled Myford Super 7 looks to be a steal at the current price, but bidders may just be holding off until Friday https://www.hilditchauctions.co.uk/lot_ ...

    LN factory tour

Any one been on one? I am going to be in the area in April and was wondering if they ran regular tours, or only by appointment. Don't think I'd make the effort to get there if it is just the show room open. Here's hoping the pound has strengthened a bit more by then as I'd like to put a No.8...

    JPT-310 digital thickness gauge

Has anyone fitted one of these to their Jet planer thickenesser? I received one today from Axminster, well I had to get my 10% off something. It doesn't fit as the locating lug seems to be in the wrong place by about 7mm. Oh, and the Jet sticker is upside down. Maybe it was a friday gauge. Have...

    Bicycle build

Every New Years Day we have a gravity race in our village. The only rules this year are that the contraption has to cost less than £40 to build, and has to be built between Christmas and New Year. This is my entry for this year. Made using the waney off-cuts of 3" beech that I bought for my...

    Workbench build (WIP)

Just took delivery today of 1/4 tonne of three inch beech It is going to be turned into a whole pile of shavings and hopefully a Charlesworth style bench. I have selected a few boards from the crown, that will be ripped into 4 inch strips and joined to make a quarter sawn top. Tommorows...

Hollow mortice chisels and auger diameter

I got a new (to me) hollow chisel morticer last week, a Sedgwick 571. It came with a mixed box of mortice chisels, some Wadkins, Ridgeway, and a bunch of Chinese ones. All of them were pretty abused, with blunt chisels and augers showing signs of blueing. So I decided to buy a few new Draper...

    Sedgwick Mortiser

Today I became the proud owner of a Sedgwick 571. Thanks to Lord Nibbo for giving me some advice on how to break it down. I am currently giving it a bit of a strip, clean and lube. (not going to repaint though) Other threads on this mortiser said that it has a counter weight, mine has a spring...

    Cleaning up glue squeeze out

Saw a tip on a US TV programme for clearing glue squeeze out from inside corners. I have always used a scrap of wood or formica to scrape it out before wiping with a warm sponge. (if i haven't managed to avoid squeeze out all together) The tip was to use a drinking straw. It is flexible...

    Cherry and Lacewood humidor

I recently made this humidor for a friend, it is the second I have made. The first was made using american black walnut and maple, this one uses american cherry and roupala lacewood. The construction is based on a single box made with through dovetails, with the top and bottom floating. The...

    Workbench design

Here are a couple of drawings of a workbench I am planning on building. It is a simplified Charlesworth pattern bench, intended to be made from 3" stock. The top is 4" thick, and I intend to use crown cut beech laminated to make a quartersawn top for maximum stability. The bench height is 40...

    Cut list sketchup script

I have been using an old ruby script to generate cut lists. This had all sorts of problems in that it wouldn't group components together or give the dimensions in a sensible order. Today I found an improved version of this script that I thought others might appreciate. You can download it...

    Record Vice dimensions

I am thinking about including a tail vice in my new bench. I want to make sure that the tail vice will fit in without interfering with the structure. I have the dimensions for the 10 1/2" (T53) vice, as that is what I have as my main vice (well, aside from alcohol and gambling). Could someone...

Westonbirt Festival of the Tree - Exhibitree 22-25 August

There seems to be a lot of talk about the Westonbirt Festival of the Tree show in the West Dean thread, so much so that I thought it would be worth starting a new thread: I live quite close to Westonbirt, and attended the show on three days last year, would have been four but for family...

    Induction motor repair

The Brook Crompton 0.5hp motor on my Fobco drill seems to be a bit louder than it used to. Applying slight downward pressure on the spindle seems to stop the noise/vibration. I'm guessing this means that one/both of the bearings is shot. Does anyone know if changing these is a home workshop job...

    Quadrant and other box hinges

I am looking for a decent quadrant hinge to fit to a humidor I am building for a friend. I have a Brusso quadrant hinge, but at £27 from Classic Hand Tools, I am saving that for my own humidor  I also have a couple of quadrant hinges that I bought from Original Marquetry, for £5.95...

Planing the sides of a through dovetailed box

I have been practicing through dovetails by just making one joint, The final step being to plane up the sides after the joint has set. No problems with that. I have now progressed to making four joints at once for a box. All seems to be gluing together nicely at the moment. When it has set I...

    Cutting thin slots

I am hoping to make a shove ha'penny board for a friend, similar to this The brass bed markers are hinged and sit in thin slots about 1mm wide. My question is how to cut those thin slots. I haven't found a blade that thin for a table saw, and a router bit that thin wouldn't be deep enough. I...

    Fobco Universal restoration

I recently purchased a Fobco Universal drill (like a Fobco Star but with the capability to perform "light milling duties"), an example can be seen here: http://www.lathes.co.uk/fobco/ (half way down the page) It runs beautifully, but has a bit of surface rust that I am sorting out. I have a...

    Fixing new workshop floor

My workshop floor is a rough screeded concrete (garage), and I want to lay T&G chipboard over it to make it more comfortable, easier to clean, and easier to roll my machines around. I am intending to lay battens then fix 22mm T&G MR chipboard on top, with a top coat of two pack epoxy. My...
