Hey all

Another chunk of something I picked up from the reclamation yard, but not sure what it is. I normally get oak from there. This bit has been on the shelf for ages and only just planned the saw marks off it.

The bit on the right is the usual oak I get from there, but not sure what the bit on the left is.

Very very hard and tight grained. Feels a bit buttery?? when planing. The only thing I can get to plane it is my recently acquired record number 8 with a very sharp iron. (shameless gloat)

Any ideas?

Almost certainly Oak for me. Probably just a different cut. The piece on the right looks quarter sawn.
You say tight grained though and that doesn't describe Oak?

Looking at that grain pattern it could be sweet chestnut. Very similar to oak but slightly lighter in weight and machines easier.
All other characteristics are the same ie tanning etc.
