Does anybody have any dimensions of the carved out bit of a Windsor chair?

I am going to make a garden bench over Easter from new oak sleepers. I want to sculpt it so that the sitting bits have the shape that a Windsor chair has but I don't know how deep to make it and the oval size/shape.

I plan to use 24grit and a ROS. Struggling to lay it out on paper.

Isn't said that Bycyle seats were designed by sitting on a pile of damp sand after a long ride?
My own feeling is for a maximum depth between 1/2" and 3/4" ( 12 - 18mm). The 'pommel' I sometimes make too long, depends on the size of the users I guess. The front scallop, well that is the bit that forms one side of the bucket seat, so perhaps not too deep. Others with more experience will likely have better answers.
By the way I find that using both hands is a good way of comparing the profile of the too halves.
HTH xy.

Fine woodworking suggested drawing round your butt, and it worked very well for me. I agree that the scooping out need be no more than 1/2 to 3/4" - having sat on a fair fiew chairs (bodger's ball craft competition ...) it is surprising how little hollowing is needed to make a chair a lot more comfortable than a flat board.

If it's for outdoor use then rainwater will puddle in the shaped hollows. Stick to either slatted or a flat board that's sloped so the water runs off.

Or drill a big wide hole through the lowest part of the hollow and enjoy the added bonus of an outdoor commode ;)
