Hi all

I'm in the process of setting up my own wood workshop in my extended garage, I have bought various tools and machines all which make some good mess, after getting a Axminster thicknesser over the weekend and doing a few test runs, I really need some kind of vaccum or extractor.

I was wondering what most people tend to use at home, I'm just doing this all as a hobby but I could of filled a large refuse sack in 10 mins with that thicknesser.!

I have been debating a Axminster extractor new for about £180 but if it's overkill and going to take up unwarranted space then I would like some other options, maybe wet & dry vaccum but I don't really want filters and bags to worry about

As always any advice would be greatly appreciated other than getting the missus to whip round with the Hoover when I'm done !

If you mean this extractor?
http://www.axminster.co.uk/axminster-ho ... -extractor
Then i would say it is ideal compared to a hoover etc.

I have this
http://yorkleen.co.uk/documents/product ... Extractors
And it doesn't cope with the Axminster CT330 thicknesser. Today i completely cleaned the thicknesser of all shavings etc. After sending 8 pieces of timber for my bench and 3 pieces for a box through. I was left with all this on just the outside.

Plus all the inside and rear will have just the same. Oh plus there is whatever has fallen on the floor. :( So with a vacuum type extractor i am always sweeping up.

As you've found out, as soon as you get a thicknesser you do NEED a decent dust/chip extractor. Besides the mess, the real problem is that unless you get the chips/shavings out of the machine immediately it will soon clog up and the planed surface will suffer.
Something like the Axi mentioned above or http://www.dm-tools.co.uk/product.php/s ... /RPWCX2600 is pretty much essential. They do take up a bit of space I'm afraid, but you will need something that can pull through big volumes.
The smaller bin types (eg http://www.dm-tools.co.uk/product.php/s ... n/RPWRSDE1) might suffice if you're only working on small amounts at a time, but if you try to do a bigger project you'll end up spending a lot of time emptying the bin.
It might be worth noting that you don't really need expensive bags they claim for these. Heavy duty garden bin bags work fine or just reuse the ultra heavy duty ones supplied.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the quick response.

The Axminster awede2 above was the machine I had in mind, however at a quick look at the specs of the record power cx2600 am I right in assuming it is more powerfull than the Axminster?

Can you get attachments to use these as a actual Hoover so I can connect a pole and floor head to clean up?

I can't understand how you can get one of these to catch everything from the thicknesser, the rate and amount it spits out is mind boggling and I'm only doing old pallets! I don't think there is a dust collection port on my Axminster ct330 thicknesser? Is there some kind of huge pan required to catch it ?

And finally, these extractors don't seem to have different size rubber attachments which I thought they would, the port on my sander and saw are much smaller than this elephant trunk 100mm hose they come with

Maybe I could buy a elephant ?

Not easy to work out which is best just by the spec. The Axi one has a 750w motor compared to the Record's 600W, but the Record has a higher flow rate.
Other complications are that the Axi looks to have a useful mouth piece for the hose, but the hose appears shorter than the Record.

Yes, but wandering around with the end of the hose near the ground works pretty well in my experience.

You'll probably have to contrive some sort of collection hood+bracket or stand to fit. Something like http://www.axminster.co.uk/axminster-bendi-hoze might help.

You can get a range of adaptors or make them yourself. eg http://www.axminster.co.uk/wood-working ... ccessories

There should be a dust extraction outlet on the CT330 there is on mine. Did you buy it new?

If used. There are 2 screw holes at the rear of the machine where the blade cover/ tools are. The screws supplied with kitchen unit door handles/ knobs fit. They are for attaching the shroud. You can either ask axi if they sell the shroud or you can make one.

If it's new, get in touch with axi and ask for it as it supplied with the machine. :)

This is charnwoods version of the one axi sells. You can see how it works in the video. :)

Thankyou all so very much for all your kind and FAST help ! I think im going to order the Axminster today, im going to call as i need a few other bits for my planer, i managed to get it for £100 as it was sold as "not working", after some new blades, drive belt and remoulding the teeth on the plastic cogs under the machine (cangle and screwdriver) and some grease, its working as new ! not bas considering there still selling this model for over £650 ! However im a few screws missing, the ones that seat the blade guard on, however, i may as you suggest make my own plate to sit here and suck up what it can, however given the rate and distance the bugger spits the shavings out, i would be more than impressed if it caught them all, anyays, these heavy chips are not too worrying as i can hoover them up afterwards, its all teh dust from sanding i hate the most covering EVERYTHING in the workshop !!

Again i cant thankyou all enough, what a FANTASTIC bunch of guys you are on here !!!!

Ask if they sell those cogs too, i think they used to. Could come in handy for the future :)

Hi Andy,
I use an Axi AWEDE2 chip extractor successfully for my P/T in the garage, and a Numatic NV 750 (also from Axi) in my shed for the table saw, bandsaw etc. It struggles with the table saw but as I use this saw infrequently I manage OK. Both extractors are reasonably quiet, around 70db each compared to some with brush motors which are very noisy.
Hope this is helpful to you.
Cheers,
John

We'll I rang Axminster to ask a few questions pre ordering the extractor, the rep advised me I should go for the next model up FM300BC as it has twice the airflow of the lesser model and the ct3300 thicknesser requires a min of 1000 m3. I was happy to purchase this but the Axminster could not tell me how to couple them together which worried me! Also, I can't reduce the hose down to sizes to fit my table saw, sander etc as apparently the motor will overload and won't have enough suction, therefore I have decided to just stick with a big vac for sanding, sawing etc and I will just sweep up the chips from the planer as there quite heavy, don't become airborne therefore are not too much of a concern. I was hoping for a one machine does all solution, I liked some of the links above that also utilised a vaccum to separate the dust particles, I will look further into this whilst wondering why can I not buy a one machine solution off the shelf ?

So they can't get you a replacement extraction hood? I will try to get some pics/ measurements of mine tomorrow for you. That way you can make your own out of ply/ mdf etc. For the pipe connection you just need a piece of the straight part of a toilet pan connector. It fits just nicely inside the 100mm flexi hose. :)

Should be able to get one at a local plumbers / builders merchant or even b+q

Thanks for that carlb40, however i did not receive this manifold that you have with yours, did it come with the machine or did you buy separate ?

It came with it, but then i bought mine new. That's why i suggested asking axminster if they sold them separately if yours is missing. They used to list quite a few spares for the CT330 and now they have bought it back they may still get them?
