i came across a large lump of beech a while ago that was a bit weird my dad has been in the tree surgery business for 35 years and cannot say what has done this to this tree.
it came from a very large healthy beech tree with no visible fungi or growth that would help identify this strange wood.
the heart wood of the tree was not spalted dozed or rotten but bright orange with small holes running through it filled with what look like cotton wool.

i was wondering if any turners out there have come across this before as every tree tree surgeon i have spoken to has not got a clue.
here is a pic of the butt and my son.
