Been doing some little boxes during the past ten days for a four day craft fair which starts on Tuesday.

Can anybody give me some sort of idea of what the usual asking price for these things are.

Hi Andy, they look very nice and a good variety of shapes and timbers.

Part of the pricing equation is the type of craft fair, where it is located, other sellers, expected customer profile etc, as well as time of year !

My complete guess is, and others will have their own ideas and experiences, that between £15 to £50 for most, depending on the context of where you are selling. Well finished, well proportioned pieces from interesting timbers could well fetch more in upmarket or well regarded galleries, whereas a small local craft fair with limited footfall and in a not particularly well to do area might see you struggling to move any regardless of price !!!

You can also try pricing reactively, start high or low and adjust pricing over the course of the four days depending how it goes, but decide beforehand the minimum prices you would be prepared to sell at or at which you would rather take them back home again ?

Good luck !

Cheers, Paul

Cost of materials, electricity etc + whatever hourly rate you think is good and then add at least 25% for profit. You also need to factor in cost of the table, getting there etc.

Thanks chaps, I haven't done this before having only started turning a year ago and only as an aside from my jewellery boxes, I thought these would be a nice compliment to them and was 'volunteered' by my daughter who makes glass bowls etc.

its a bit hard to tell from the picture.... but if the finish is as good as it looks (both inside and out)
"started turning a year ago" I’d say you've definitely got a natural talent for turning

I search on Google for 'turned Boxes' then click on 'Images' to get designs, can't come up with my own yet.

I am using a spray sanding sealer then wax, it seems to be ok but could be better, not quite blemish free, I sand down to 600 grit but find very fine lines in the wax finish, I use proper polishing cloth (paper) is there a better way?

finishing is a complex subject and is more to do with finding what works for you as opposed to one finish that will work for everyone.
I sand to 600 on most woods (higher on exoctics like african blackwood) then use either u-beauts EEE followed by paste wax inside then EEE followed by shellwax outside applied by loose leaf mop. or if i want a satin or matt finish i use woodoc 5 or 10 inside and out.
hope this helps
