Any volenteers to sort out the bash this year? I woudl do it but I'm only allowed to host them every two years :)

It was great fun to host and I'm certainly up to do next year (if thay gives you any idea of the reward / effort balance).

Topoics which didn't get air time last year were Pen Turning and Fruit so there's two ready made posibilities. I'd like to add colouring technicques (stains / application etc) if anyone coming has any skills in that area :)

Hi

I went back through the last years thread and it looked like it was a great event. I would love to attend one.

I notice not too much of a rush to host it.

I have very limited parking and not much of a workshop space but if all else fails I would host rather than not having a Bash. I do have space that a small marquee type thing could be put up and put a couple of "visiting" lathes parked in.

So put me down as a potential - a host of last resort as it were!, if all else fails as I don't think it's a particularly good venue but better than none.

The tent in the garden has legs - I've got a 3m one with sides I could bring if the bash ends up with you :)
Put me down as the first of the attendees :)

The open thought process at work ....

Quite apart from where to have it there does not seem much interest as to whether TO have it?

I understand the fear of comment for risk of being descended upon

Is it worth asking who would be interested in attending and indicative time of year/date - is there a traditional date that it occurs each year?

Numbers and dates presumably dictate who would come and consequently what resources are required.

But as a "Bash Virgin" I still have my stabilisers on and don't really know what I am talking about ... :D

I didn't have to worry about the date as I stepped in when it was canned so just took the date. I would suggest taking the two weekends either side of that date and ask if there are any strong preferences + anyone who would be able to come and demo.

I agree that once someone has actuallty stood up and shuoldered the "burden" people will come out and say they want in....It may also prompt a more northern (Birmingham sort of area) person to offer as I had a lot of drop out in the early stages as the Midlands / Norther group were unable to face the trip to my place (though George notably managed to make it which I was very glad about).

Have you checked with the other half? :) :)

I would be interested in attending a bash within a 2 hour drive but I think Birmingham is a bit too far away for me.

Also I would not mind doing a bit of a demo or tutoring while I’m there, makes a change to get out from my own workshop :)

I suppose it would be a bit out of the way over here in that case
It is very difficult to arrange for a bash that is suitable for everyone but they have been a huge success from what I can gather. I never was able to get to one.
It seems to me that maybe a weekend bash should be considered, although it would probly be too expensive.
But you would maybe have a better chance if you told her indoors that you were taking her away for a weekend

Hi there.

I have not been involved with your bash before, being a newbie to the site, and I’m more a furniture maker than turner but could host the bash at my teaching workshops in Worcestershire. I have three lathes here and tooling as I run turning courses here (by Chris Eagles not me!) There is plenty of parking and 150m2 of workshop space and a classroom with large flat screen monitor for DVDs and lectures if that helps.

I am having an open day here on Saturday 9Th July, where Chris will be demonstrating on his Vicmarc, along with other demos on furniture and woodworking techniques. I never thought I would say this (but here we go) - see web site below for details!

If anyone wants to come and join us to see if the venue would suit your needs, let me know and I would be pleased to see you on the open day. Otherwise you can follow the link to the website to take a look or enter our competition to win a free course of your choice such as furniture making, wood machining, French polishing, chair making or even turning!

Thanks Peter - Thats a very generous offer which for my part I would rush to accept.

At the risk of being "indelicate", would there be a cost for using your luxurious facilities?

Would you have available dates in September that we could settle on to move it forward?

Hi Guys

It’s not indelicate at all to ask – no cost for the use of the facilities and I am sure you will bring your own materials, food and brooms;-). There is plenty of room here for a BBQ …

I have 2 x Axminster Lathes AWVSL 1000s and one very similar NU Tools, if you have other lathes and kit you want to bring just let me know (as long as it complies to H&S and is PAT tested).

I don’t know how the bash works but if you wanted either Chris Eagles who teaches here, or Paul Hodgson (pole lathe turner who is an ex-student of mine and teaches my Clissett chairmaking course) then I could arrange for them to demonstrate (if available), if that is what you are looking for, and I would need to cover their standard fee for that.

What’s in it for me? I can learn a lot more about wood turning as it is not my specialism and hopefully your attendees will like what we do here and tell their friends about us …

Best date for me would be Saturday 3rd September. This is a good date for me as I will be busy at Celebration of Craftsmanship until the 29th and then my 9 month professional course starts shortly after, and it will be very full on for me from then).

Let me know

Cheers Peter

Peter

For my part I am "virtually" biting your hand off.

I guess there will always be conflict over who can make what dates but as there was not a rush to host it the 3rd September being good for you is the date we work around

I have not been involved before in a bash either, but I get the impression these things evolve in this way.

Unless someone comes along to tell me I'm "out of order" can we assume that it is a done deal and that then settles the date and venue. With those key details I am sure the rest will fall into place.

Is there a comfortable maximum number of attendees that you can accommodate?

I will also put my name down as attending.

From previous Bashes it appears it is a one day event. Open thoughts for discussion ... Is there a good pub/hotel nearby that offers b&b at reasonable rates to make a day round off in a hostelry to eat and wash it down with a pint or 2? Is this something others would want to do?

Hi Peter

Very kind offer to use the school workshop =D>

Could I ask you to let us know the school post code so I can work out how far I will have to travel if I can make the date

Regards

Allen
