I now officially give up trying to use plain-ended scrollsaw blades on my SiP.

I've shut the lights off and closed the workshop door before I take a lump-hammer to the damn thing. (hammer)

Rant over, thanks for listening.

Dammit, you just reminded me I need to buy some bandsaw blades too.

Hi NazNomad,

If your scroll saw is one of the any brand cheaper end clone type saws on the market try buying a pair of Axminster scroll saw blade clamps if they will fit the saw you have. Also, change the Chinese plastic bolts for stainless steel ones, M4 x 20mm if I remember correctly. They are much stronger and don't strip out the heads as easily as the original ones supplied.

That is what I did to my Axminster version of their any brand entry level scroll saw before I bought my current Excalibur EX21. It made the saw usable for what I needed it for but still not perfect, hence my upgrade to the Excalibur.

Hope this helps,
Regards,
Dave.

Thanks for that, I'll have another try once I've forgotten where my lump-hammer is.

Hi Naznomad:

+1 for what Ardenwoodcraft said. My 1st so-called pinless blade scroll saw was an Einhell. Same "almost junk", same problem with blades not being held properly (amongst other probs). As well as the Axi pinless blade clamps (which fitted my Einhell with minimal "engineering", including changing the bolts for decent SS examples) I also found that a quick light rub with emery paper on the ends of the blades also helped. But I also upgraded in the end, and as it happens, also to an Excalibur 21 as it happens.

I've tried the emery paper trick, then I went onto cutting the clamps to take some stress off the Allen screws. Still no joy.

As you've all (almost kindly, lol) mentioned, I do have a 'piece-of-sh*t' saw. I'm very happy with the stuff I've made with pinned blades, so until I win the Lottery and can afford to upgrade, I'm reining in my ambition a bit and sticking with slightly less complicated patterns.

As you've got on OK with pinned blades you can also try grinding the length of the pins down a bit on a grinding wheel which will at least enable you to drill slightly smaller entry holes for internal cuts. Before I "upgraded" to the Einhell I had a very old Dremel (model Motoshop) and found the trick of shortening the pins did help a bit.

Anyway, at least your lump hammer is now surplus to requirements NazNomad! :D

Meantime good luck with pinned blades (if you don't want to try the Axi clamps) - that's better than just giving up - personally I really do enjoy my scroll sawing.

One other thought - if you have a band saw you can do quite intricate cuts with a very narrow blade (though not inside cuts of course). Talk to Ian John of Tuffsaws (member of this Forum).

All the best mate.
