Matt, its on the shortlist.

Scaredy cat, double that for shipping to Cyprus and youre starting to understand my problem.

My axminster man must be on holiday. i try to deal with one person at a time so they understand my transportation, but he's a week overdue so far. i can wait another week because we have visitors coming and the workshop shuts down then.

Ahh Cyprus.. sorry missed that bit..

Bob, I've got no idea what shipping costs are - is it feasible to purchase something and have it delivered to a UK address and then organise separate shipping to Cyprus? Or is that a comparable cost to just having it delivered to Cyprus in the first place?

Matt,

shipping costs.... oh boy oh bot oh boy.
When i was buying a bandsaw 3 years ago, I originally chose a record. The company I was at (yandles) quite literally laughed in my face when i asked for shipping to Cyprus. The very worst customer (non) service I have ever experienced.
I tried another company to ship the record.. I was quoted the cost of the machine again PLUS £40.

I bought axminster purely on shipping. £90 door to door (admittedly they thought my door was 600 miles further north and in a different continent than it was, but that was TNT, not axminster). So axminster gets my business purely on shipping (£60 for a lunchbox thicknesser)

I havent shipped anything heavy personally, but have been told that £400 is the number to consider if its a private deal.

When i first started woodworking 4 years ago I was getting good deals from BA by upgrading to business class and quadrupling my luggage allowance. But they have now gone to stupid prices for upgrades (like from £80 to 1800 quid extra per person, on a 300 quid economy ticket) so that door is now closed.
When we moved here our container with all our worldly goods took 6 weeks, and that was a full container. I dread to think how long it would take to ship a single item as part of a consignment load.
Its ironic that there are so many old used machines on ebay in the area I used to live in, but such is my luck.

Crikey, yeah. I just got a quick quote, with TNT economy coming out at around £215 for 75kg :(

Is there not a European retailer equivalent to axminster? Sorry if I'm asking a bunch of questions you've already considered!

dont worry about the questions, its good to be able to vent my frustration on somebody.

Cyprus is just too small to have any home made industry for machinery, so everything is shipped in. Theres no hobby market at all. Cypriots have a fantastic work ethic, most of them have at least two jobs (which is why mercedes is the most common car to see in the driveway) and they dont retire untill they physically cant work anymore. I worked with several who were well into their 70's and it was their choice (I got blank looks when I told them i was retiring on my 65th birthday, the question they all asked was "what are you going to do all day"?) Then when they do have to quit they just sit outside the coffee shops untill they die.

And although there are small businesses all over the place, they are all father son hand me downs working from their back garden sheds and the machinery just doesnt get sold.

So theres me, brand new hobby, and only new imported top dollar machinery to buy. I mentioned how dear makita is here... 10 years ago now when I first came here I wanted a jigsaw for diy use. I got my friend to bring a makita from England. At that time the Uk price was HALF of the Cyprus price, and the cypriot dealer was having a 30% off sale!

Its not that I HAVE more to spend, its that I think I am going to HAVE to spend more.

Just had to scrap another box because i could not get 4 flat sides.
Its getting urgent.
SunnyBob
I do hope you have some plan for jointing stock first, as the tablesaw is not a tool like a bandsaw is...
as in... you cant freehand cut anything, and have to prepare the timber with a jointer or plane beforehand, otherwise its downright dangerous, and will fling the wood or you will end up trying to keep it true and put your hand in to the blade!
Just thought you should know that since I was talking about a machine with a more efficient, and yet much more powerful induction motor.
Have you considered a good used bandsaw with flat tires that will properly take an inch blade
like a wee Italian 400 series?
I imagine SCM, ACM and all the other similar Italian companies like Centauro, Sagitarrio,
Agazzani,Meber etc dominate the market since they share parts and infrastructure.
Regardless about what machine those brands will be most likely the most popular.
I think I seen a website called machineseeker or something like it ...
a sort of euro gumtree if you like
I just remember finding that website researching ACM/Griggio bandsaws.

Worth a shot checking a site like that,
I have got an unusual Italian saw actually, which I got for the Princely sum of 100 quid
It has an arbor that can tilt left and right, those Italians build nice stuff
Good luck
Tom

Hi Bob,
Is there a car ferry to cyprus? Could you get a machine shipped tp say a turkish port, then nip over on the ferry and back?
Not sure on prices or whether you have access to or could rent a car
Ian

Ttrees, i have a bandsaw and its pretty good for most things, but its not the be all and end all.
The italian companies are geared for mainland europe, so any greek dealers are in Athens, and the only way from Athens to here is by air or cargo boat, right back where we started.

Fezman (turkish connection?)... The only vehicle ferry is from Turkey to the north of cyprus. The shipping costs would be more and the machine would have to go outside europe and come back in. DO NOT GO THERE!

Axminster is without a doubt my cheapest delivery system. I've had word back now and the ts 250 is looking the most likely, but I want to mix and match a few bits so still waiting on final price.

Bob

If you are going the Axminster TS200-250 route please do get the extension table, not for the table, but for the upgraded fence that comes with it.

Mike

Mike, thats in the plan.
I dont want the 40 tooth blade that comes with it, I already have two. i want a fine tooth blade.
I dont want the legs, but I do want both tables.
The price will be the decider now. I really hope its in my budget.

Sunnybob, I've followed your previous posts about all the "excitement" you've had getting TNT (I think it was?) to deliver to you in Cyprus, so understand why you want to stick with Axi (very good company IMO).

BUT, I've no idea if this applies to you in Cyprus (do you use € Euro currency?) but wonder if you've considered, just as an example, a couple of the German dealers (also work in Euros of course)? No idea how their prices compare with UK (Axi, etc) but I've had excellent service (and compared to Switzerland , excellent prices) from both Dieter Schmid Fine Tools (Berlin) and Dictum GmbH (near Munich).

No idea if they can fix delivery to Cyprus (I guess yes), and as both cities are geographically nearer to you than UK, courier charges MAY be cheaper??? (Logic suggests it should be, but logic doesn't count for a lot I know)!

Links in case you want a look at prices (both are very helpful and have staff with English as good as my own). Just an idea:

Dictum: http://www.mehr-als-werkzeug.de/page/homepage.htm

Schmid: http://www.fine-tools.com/

Helps MAYBE??

It might do if they sold Tablesaws which neither do apart from Dictum that sell a 2K Mafell. :)

dictum link is 404 not found.
the other one doesnt sell table saws.

The machine itself can be had for similar prices all over the place (except cyprus). its the shipping that is the deal breaker on everyone else.
Axminster does so much business with tnt they must be losing money on each parcel just to say they have the business.

I'm not sure about Dieter Schmid sunnybob, (thinking about it, I think Schmid is only hand tools, not sure, sorry) , but as per my current Dictum "Electro Werkzeug & Maschinen katalog" (2016) they sell Mafell, Festool, Bosch, & Axminster machines (inc various table saws). And what's not in their catalogue they can order in.

Again, "just saying"!

The Dictum link again: www.dictum.com

That link worked.
Cheapest table saw there was 1300 euro PLUS shipping.
ta but no ta.

I guess you have Skype? Certainly E-mail.

Did you call them/E-mail them to get a price on your preferred model/s? I guess not!

I shall stop trying to help you mate, sorry.

AES

AES. Their CHEAPEST saw was 1300 euro going up to 4000 plus.
The axminster saw is 600 odd quid. Are you confident they will give me a 60 % discount as a one time retail buyer? and throw the shipping from germany to Cyprus in for another £50?
Advice and help is always received with thanks, but there needs to be a realistic chance of it helping.

Dictum and Dieter Schmid (Fine tools) are great places to buy stuff (I have ordered from Finetools a few times) but they aren't the place to be buying workshop machines like Tablesaws. They specialise in hand tools really, and nice ones at that.

Looks like Axminster is your best bet unless you can convince somewhere like FFX etc. to get stuff to you.
