I'm in Lancashire, and really struggle to find decent ply around me at the moment. I've recently picked up some 9mm and 12mm birch ply BB from CWBerry, the local major trade merchant, and I'd describe it as "good". When I look at some of the work that people do on here, the ply looks immaculate. Part of that of course is getting a good cut, something I've yet to master and rests firmly on me, but the veneers themselves are beyond my control!

Are there any chains that stock decent ply at all?

I'm having the same problems here. I get mine through Howarth timber but they get it from Meyer's for me or Laver's if i'm desperate, as theirs is cheaper but not as good quality. I've just inquired about the availability of 10'x5' sheets because they will work better with my cutting list but being told there's none to be had in that size from their suppliers. They also told me that there is a general lack of good quality birch ply around at the moment but lo and behold, they have inevitably mentioned that the prices have gone up yet again. The stuff i have had through Meyer's in the past has been of a good quality but the Laver stuff was just about acceptable. Did notice more voids in their stuff and took more work to get a decent finish, especially on the edges. Looks like i will now be paying beyond £70 per sheet for 18mm decent stuff, so i will follow this thread eagerly.

Possibly a bit far from you but I have good ply from Booker Timber in Ellesmere Port. I don't know if they deliver as I pick up from them.

Was very pleased with some I had from Travis Perkins a couple of months back

I have to say I never even went to look at my local TP when I found out that a 12mm sheet in BB grade would cost me £70+vat!!

I've bought Redwood; Far Eastern Ply and MDF from them -- all good

In the past I've asked about Baltic Birch; they can get it, can't remember how much

Their Redwood is the cheapest I can find around this area; free local delivery on £100 excl VAT orders

Close to Wigan Pier

I got large sheets of birch through ply from Lathams. It was good but not the absolute best. Think it was Estonian or something (Baltic anyway). Best is Finnish or Swedish I believe, but it is expensive.

Yeah, i've seen that Lathams do large sheets but i use Howarth Timber as the middle man and they don't deal with them. Meyer also do large sheets but have none in at the moment. Some places only do the large sheets in the lower grades too. Think i will have to stick to the regular 8'x4' sheets for now and live with the waste.

I've looked at that brochure before from Lathams. I try to get B/BB which is good one side and has some patches on the other. Quality varies though, even if it has the same rating. The stuff i get from Meyer is better than the last lot i got from Laver's, though Laver's was a good bit cheaper. I don't know what quantities Lathams will supply. The most i ever buy is 5 sheets of various thickness but usually it's just a couple at a time to stock up on a particular thickness. There isn't a great deal of difference price wise between 9mm and 12mm i've found.

I just got various quotes around £30 a sheet (8x4') for quality not quite guaranteed. Am off to have a look at some.
They'll all do even one sheet - charge for delivery but give a discount for quantity.
Salesmen are generally pretty helpful (if they are any good!). I tell 'em it's a design project (it is) with hints of becoming the next IKEA.

I did have a ring around a few suppliers with varying results this time last year but then found out that my local Howarth's would get in in for me, so went with them. Think i will have another ring around tomorrow and see what i can come up with.

Just received 12mm Birch plywood from Brooks Timber, B/BB grade, also cheaper than Travis Perkins!
The B face has no voids/fillers. Will cut it up this weekend and see what it’s like. Face value it seems better quality then the Travis Perkins birch ply.

The best ply grade that's commonly available is B/BB, the "B" face may have one or two tiny natural blemishes but it won't have any plugs. The "BB" face will almost certainly have several plugs so that goes on the back or the inside. Even B/BB allows a few voids within the grading system.

Next down is S/BB. The "S" face will have plugs, but a lot fewer than the "BB" face and often they're better executed, i.e. with wiggly edges so they blend better rather than rugby ball shapes. You used to be able to get a slightly better version called S+/BB, with even fewer plugs, but I haven't seen any for years.

All of the faces on these higher quality grades should come sanded smooth.

The problem with ply is the grading is only part of the story. All ply has thickness variations, but with some manufacturers the variation is more extreme and it can even vary by a few tenths within an individual sheet. I also had a sheet recently that was actually thicker than the nominal size, something I'd never seen before. Another issue is how well it's been stored in the distribution pipeline. Good suppliers store it flat, bad suppliers lean it against a damp wall for weeks on end until it's like a model of a skateboarding park. A decent supplier will also give you a choice of long or short grain configuration.

If you've got deep pockets there's also speciality ply. For example there's a German company that manufactures Beech and Poplar ply, it's within a few thou of nominal and has zero voids or defects. It's been a while since I bought any but I recall it was at least twice the price of B/BB.

Another trick is to buy speciality model making ply, it's only available up to about 3mm thick but it's flawless, you can then make up your own thicker ply by laminating this stuff together.

Also Artist ply, used for illustration and artistic painting directly onto the surface, its generally perfect on both face's, but does come in limited size's, I have some 18mm at the moment and it has perfect face's on both sides.

I was paying just under £50 per sheet for Finnish ply last year.
Same supplier charged me £61 the other day...

The prices i have just got are roughly the same without VAT as they were including VAT last year. Don't know what that works out to percentage wise but it's a big hike all the same.

A client had two sheets of birch ply delivered today, which I unloaded and stuffed straight into store without (foolishly) looking at it too closely. When I went back to check it later I realised one side of one sheet had been badly stained by the bearers and the other had the outer laminate ripped off at a couple of points on both long edges. One side of each had a fair few elliptical patches with a couple on the other side.

As the ply is to be used untreated and to be seen it's going back. The patches are to be expected at the price, £120 for two sheets including delivery, but surely any timber product to be delivered ought to come in good condition and not be fairly badly b******d about in handling.

Personally I'd prefer not to get timber stuff without selecting it myself, however the client and myself have had birch ply from the same supplier in good condition before and assumed they knew how to deal with it.

I won't name the supplier, but they are local and their name is similar to excellent penis.
