I think that's a word.....
I have made a few earring stands in the past, but saw a version of this on the t'interwebs somewhere and decided to have a go.
It is all from the same half log of yew, and has had a quick polish with beeswax.

Inside the box still needs some sanding I think, especially the lid. Although it doesn't look as bad with the dust wiped off.

There are a few things I would do differently if I ever do another, but I'm fairly chuffed with it as a first stab at the shape.

Taz,

For a first attempt, it aint bad.
Like all Woodturners, we make something, look at it & then think ''I know what I would change on the next one''.
It's all a learning curve & not everyone will like what you make - but if you like it, who cares - feel proud of your first attempts, I know I do (even if some of them are hidden away in very dark corners!!)
Like you, I'm a relatively new (2 yrs I think) turner & love experimenting and trying new things.
Enjoy your turning.

That is a very good attempt Taz although I'm not to keen on the shape I can see it is well turned and finished good to see you are enjoying your turning as Steven said as long as you like it then you have done what you set out to do save it and look back on it in a few years and you will see how well you have come on keep the picks coming sorry I haven't commented before I missed it some how

Well I Like The Shape And design and being A New turner there nuffin wrong with thatit does give me a few thoughts on copying it    Nice bit of Yew =D> =D> =D>
Regards
Bill

Thanks for the feedback folks. It's always good to have another enthusiast cast their eye over stuff.
Aye, the shape is a bit marmite really. I thought it looked a tad top-heavy, but the ring is supposed to allow the earrings to overhang the bit underneath apparently, according to the website I pinched the idea from. (it has been said that copying design is a form of flattery, so perhaps I should say "the website I flattered the idea from") It isn't identical to the one I saw, obviously. I just used the shape as a guide.

Taz,

It's all about enjoying & having fun with this hobby of ours (& learning of course but thankfully the learning is mostly practical rather than theory).
Any time your down South Lanarkshire way give me a shout & we can swap destroyed turnings stories lol
