I recently got my hands on a Record Power DP58B for an exceptional price. I haven't used it in anger as yet but it spins the pointy bit, which seems like what it should do ... init guv..

There is one thing that I don't understand and it's this:

I can't find anything in the manual and its function isn't that obvious to me. What is it? What's it for?

Oh and also this, it was in the box too, can't find anything about it either..

It looks like the mounting arm and switch for the guard. The black bit on the drill has an interlock switch inside to prevent the drill from starting if the guard is not rotated to its place in front of the quill. The two white standoffs on the square rod are where the plastic shield would have mounted.

My Optimum drill press came with something similar, but I removed it and made sure the interlock switch was in correct position before I removed the square rod.

Ok, this seems to make sense since I also got a big, chunkier guard in the box (compared to the one in the manual above) and I couldn't work out how it was meant to be mounted.

The drill press was disassembled when it arrived here, but runs without it in place - for the moment I'll leave it detached.
