:) I don't think I've ever owned anything that I haven't taken the plastic thingy off.
The number one design rule seems to be "It'll be much safer if they can't actually see what they're doing."
 
First thing i did, its a pain in the butt and i can see no purpose for it at all....if you are of mind to go sticking your fingers down there whilst the saw is running then you are best kept out of the workshop! :p
 
Same with my new jet JDP15 pillar drill, the first thing that had to go was the chuck guard.

IIt made drilling difficult and dangerous not being able to see and hold the work properly with it attached. A good clamping system and pair of giggles is far better.

It seems H&S are inherently building in safety problems and just making the machines difficult to use or adjust with their over zealous ways of protecting us from ourselves.
