rasps wanted

hi could anyone recomend some good rasps i have some of the narex ones but i make alot of walking sticks and would like some nice halfround rasps to make life better .
i dont want rough harsh cutting i need something that cuts well but also leaves a decent finnish as to reduce the manual sanding.

I think you are needing hand-stitched rasps. May I recommend Liogier. Huge range of forms, profiles and grains. The other better-known is Auriou but I feel Noel Liogier's are better value, absolutely as good - his Sapphir are arguably better. And he's a really nice bloke!

i don't think that I have a half round- i bought a few a few months ago and they are surprisingly useful.

I've used Auriou, Liogier and the Dictum rasps. The last are not as good as the french, but for the price they are a bargain.

Depending on the shapes you wish to shape, you might think about the Iwasaki Files.

They leave a very fine finish. Working best on straight flats and curves (if straight curves is understandable.)

Can anyone remind me of the current "menu" of rasp choices?

I know (from this thread) there's:

* two hand stitched French choices
* in the USA Nicholson 51 (IIRC) are well spoken of, and I recall a
* Chinese Set being far better than it had an right to be, given the cost (edit; I think this came from WH, and is discontinued)
* Hattori (fom Dictum)
* Tomé Feteira of Portugal

Can anyone fill out this initial list? Choosing from and/or ranking
the list is a separate task.

I have one of the Iwasaki files but prefer one of the better quality rasps.
I don't know who make WH rasps but they might be added to your list. Then there are the Italian Corradi rasps and the highly thought of Pechar rasps.
I've used one of the more expensive Herdim rasps (Dictum?) and it was very good. A lot of the Violin makers think the Pechar are the best. I don't know if that is true, having not tried one. They are obviously very good though. There's probably not a lot in it when you get to the French and the Pechar's.

With some doubt I would suggest "B&B artigiana" (once called Bassoli & Barrie, they changed name for legal reasons), a new italian brand.

I've got one of their rasp and two rifloirs and like it so much.
They make two type of tooth, traditional and flat that allow a smoother surface.

I don't know if they ship in UK but I can ask them if someone is interested.
