How much are people paying to have their blades sharpened, just took mine to Axminster (sittingbourne) who charge £1 per inch, I had 3, 10 inch blades so at £30 it is only £8 cheaper than a brand new set.
Is there any other local place to take them?

I do my own but that price does sound a bit steep. Phone round a few saw doctors and you should get a reasonable idea of a market rate.

That does sound very expensive to me! :? I'd expect to pay £3 or £4 per blade with 10in knives (plus the cost of postage, where applicable). Don't know of anywhere local to you but there are plenty of firms around offering a service if you're prepared to post them.

If the edges aren't too bad (no large nicks), you could possibly try honing, only to freshen the edge - Steve Maskery made an excellent jig for this some time ago (see this video).

EYP throws up these :-

Like Bob I do my own, but my local company charges a lot less than that, provided you don't mind waiting of course!

Yep, that's pretty much right, I pay £4 for each 12" blade plus postage

I got the Tormek planer blade jig last year but I have not used it yet, anyone want me to practice on their blades???? :) :) :) :)

Tormek here as well. It works very well once you've mastered how to set it up, which I found takes a little time - Rob

Table saw, not P/T but same principle.

Resurrecting an old thread, I've just had 6 blades repaired (chipped teeth replaced) and sharpened by Dooley's. Basically got 6 as-new good quality blades for not-a-lot.

Excellent job and great value. Recommended.

I pay less than half that for the same thing
Others have quoted that much in the past, but they were not actually sharpening themselves but sending on, taking a 100% markup for doing so (which isn’t outrageous really)

The guy who asked the question, I think it was about £14 last time I have 3 250mm blades ground
Aidan

It was nearly 10 yrs ago that the guy asked the question.

My saw doctor charges 40p+vat per inch for sharpening planer blades, that works out at £14.40 for 3 x 250mm blades so must be the going rate.
