I actually went into a shop that "specialised" in this sort of stuff and met the bloke that did it all.

I don't think that he was very well :|

Someone out there once thought something like that looked good. Someone else paid too much money for it because they could afford it. Then a whole bunch of folk got greedy and thought "money for old rope, I want some of that ..." and the idea became fashionable for 10 minutes.

I can't see what the problem is - £50 for one of those is pretty good, It looks like sold cast iron parts, and base, good solid spring and the main shaft is solid cast iron too. Should be very sturdy.

oh, you mean the lamp? yeah. take all that ***** off.

It is probably not as bad as a highly skilled friend who is a professional furniture restorer, He sold a victorian cabinet to a lady that he had just french polished to a high standard, a few weeks later found out that someone else he knew had been paid to slather the thing in shabby chic chalk paint. Arrgh!

Was he in good health immediately before you met him, perchance? :p

There is a lovely big antiques shop near us. However, they have a separate section purely for stuff that has been used, abused and shabby-chic'ed to death. The room is like a faded pastel blue graveyard for once-lovely furniture and "objects d'art" just like this one. It's a very depressing place...

More importantly, why did you choose that username??!!
Every time you post, I misread it as Frying Haggis... and it makes me hungry!!

If he priced it according to the french polishing work, well what she does with it after that is her choice I guess. A couple of time's I have been guilty of asking a customer the same question though "you're not going to cover it in paint are you?" when asked to "clean up" an item they have just bought.

I looked up "piller" on the googlemonster and the first hit was a translation from French - it means "loot" :D

It is his fault for french polishing the lady. He should have done the cabinet.
