Challenge Requirements: “Fruity”

This month’s rules are:-

1. The Challenge is open to anyone and everyone.
Entries must be new and made specifically for the Challenge.
Entries must be made of wood which must be turned on a lathe using woodturning tools.
2. “Fruity” means either a turning of an apple, a pear or any other readily identifiable fruit (bananas and bunches of grapes most welcome :lol: :lol OR any turning made from a piece of fruit wood (apple, pear, plum, damson, cherry etc)
3. There are no size restrictions other than if you turn a piece of fruit it should be life-size.
4. Segmented turning, piercing and carving are allowed, as are colouring, pyrography and texturing, but the judge must be able to see your turning skills!
6. Any wood may be used if your turning is of a piece of fruit, but only fruit wood may be used if you are turning something other than a piece of fruit. Simples!

Please post three images of your work together with details of the wood used, the tools, methods and finishes used to make it and any key dimensions.

Hope this counts. Its a Fruit bowl made from apple. 200MM dia by 80MM tall.
Turned using spindle gouges bowl gouges and scrapers. The blank was almost past its best but by filling cracks and some heavy sanding I finally managed to tame it. Finished with sanding sealer and speed n eze friction polish.

A bad apple turns a bad apple out of bad apple wood. Partially rotten, turned using a spindle roughing gouge, then spindle gouge,hole drilled for the stem and remounted on a screw chuck and the bottom finished. Stem was turned and then carved a bit to the curve. 2 coats of shellac followed by a buffing with just tripoli,I think its the right amount of sheen, and the stem was done with DO. It is sposed to resemble a golden delicious, my favorite, and is about 3 1/4" by 3 1/4". Thanks

This is a bowl made from a piece of Cherry I acquired a number of years ago. The Cherry came from the interior of British Columbia, Canada and was removed from an orchard as the tree was no longer producing fruit. I used a roughing gouge, bowl gouge and scraper to make it. It was finished with 5 coats of semi gloss spray lacquer. The bowl measures 40 mm high and 80 mm in diameter. It is smaller than I was anticipating due to an unforeseen crack on the inside of my blank.

Not having any fruit wood I went for a piece of fruit.

This is from an unknown piece of wood. It measures 3 1/2" to the top of the apple not including the leaf and is 3 " at its widest.

Turned using a roughing gauge for bulk removal then spindle gauge and skew for the outside, the inside i used a spindle gauge to for a hole to the required depth then a crown revolution tool for the hollowing. Sanded down to 320grit inside and out.

The leaf and stalk are from a piece of mahogany the stalk was cut using a carving knife which does not leave it perfectly round and the leaf was cut on the scrollsaw and then finished with the carving knife to add the veins. Added a piece of clove in the bottom.

Finished with Danish oil when dry given a quick buff with the chestnut buffing system.

Yew apple. Turned in the usual way using a square scraper and a bowl gouge with a homemade screw chuck. The stalk is a piece of oak ebonised with vinegar & steel wool and I glued a clove into the bottom. I had to re-learn how to do this as its been a while!

An Apple and Walnut hollow form ( I count nuts as s fruit but I will understand if you do not. )
This is my first attempt at a hollow form and feel it is good, in parts. The main applewood body was given three coats of Danish oil and then buffed on the three wheel system. The walnut base and finial were treated in the same way but have not developed the same shine, not sure why.
Tools used were roughing gouge, square carbon tool, spindle gouge and diamond parting tool. Overall height approx 9.5 inches. Width 4.5 inches.

I really must get a light tent and decent camera.

This is the apple I attempted to do, it is made of Padauk with an oak stalk, the dimensions are 3" to the top of the stalk and 3" diameter at the widest point. The tools used were a spindle gouge, bowl gouge and a parting tool, finished with 2 coats of sanding sealer aand friction polish. Sorry if the photos are poor, but was difficult with the phone camera.

This apple is made out of Sycamore and modeled on the Braeburn shown at the end. It was cut from a large cylinder and after the top had been shaped and finished a jam chuck was cut in the remainder of the cylinder and the apple reversed for the bottom to be done. Once completed it was buffed with carnuba wax and then the stalk (Acer twig) and calyx (clove) added.
