I've just at a car-boot brought an old saw, going by the time line on Backsaw.net its about 100 years old, still with the original possibly untouched teeth.
To make it into a user, I am thinking of recutting the teeth from 6tpi. to 10tpi.
There is no makers name, only 6 1/2 faintly stamped on the blade, the handle is "London" pattern, held on with saw-screws, and warranted superior medallion, (undisturbed)

Will this be sacrilegious, to an old saw, or sensible, to give it another life?

Better to give it a new life rather than have it sit around for another god knows how long gathering dust.

If you are happy to file your own teeth then good luck with it. If not. I recall watching a Paul Sellers video some time back on how to remove old teeth and cut new ones on the saw plate with a couple of simple jigs. Of course he made it look terribly easy.

Be sure to show us the end result.

Good luck

I'd just sharpen it at 6tpi.
If you want a 10pti saw just wait until one close enough comes a long - they aren't pricey 2nd hand.
Nothing to do with sacrilege - it's only an old saw!

6 TPI and 10 TPI are different enough that other aspects of a well made 6 TPI saw won't sit nicely
with 10 TPI use - plate size, plate thickness (stiffness) overall length, handle configuration and hang
spring to mind. So you might not get a top quality 10 TPI saw for all your effort.

OTOH, If everything checks out, and you really don't think you'll ever want a 6 TPI
saw AND you really don't think you'll see a suitable 10 TPI on your s/h trawls,
yeah, sure, file away.

This is the one that has got me thinking!
The blade is heavy for its size.
Looking at the Disstonian Instute 24 inch 10tpi crosscuts were offered.
I have plenty of 6-8 tpi crosscuts, but how long before I can find a 10tpi panel saw with this style/age handle?
I'm leaning towards having the blade professionally recut, sharpened and set for a quoted £12.50 +p&p.
