Today I went into Lidl with the intention of buying a newspaper (£1.05) and a set of drill bits (£3.99).

I picked up my newspaper at the front entrance, but then things started to go horribly wrong. I was heading towards where the tools are normally sold and all of a sudden I was hit by a wonderful aroma of baked goodies. I followed the aroma and before I knew it I was bagging two triple chocolate cookies (for SHMBO) and two choc chip cookies (for me). Feeling thoroughly disappointed in my will power I proceeded to search for the drill bits I was after. Sadly, things continued to go downhill.

Before I reached the drill bits I spotted a little lamp that clips onto furniture which I thought would be ideal for my fly tying, so I picked one up. I then reached the drill bits and picked those up, too. That was already more than I had intended to buy so you can imagine my surprise when by the time I left the store, having gone in for just a newspaper and a set of drill bits (should have cost £5.04), I had bought the news paper, four cookies, a lamp, set of drill bits, set of chisels, pocket hex key thing and a hobby knife. All in all the trip ended up costing me £25.30, £20.26 more than I had intended on spending.

I know how you feel, I went in this morning intending to get 6 eggs and one of their nice seeded loafs. I came out with chisels, 12 eggs, the biggest fleecy cardigan I've ever seen, 2 loaves (rx txt fm SWMBO wants french toast) small ratchet screwdriver set, 2 japaneses type saws, 8 packets of assorted chacuterie, a toffee caramel pudding and a power file. All the while having only a tesco carrier bag and walking on one foot and a pair of crutches. should have spent £3.50 ish did spend £75  All I can say is sly very sly little B****rs putting all those shiny tools next to the cold meat. That's definately targeted man selling.
total time taken for trip of 700m with said shopping 1h 43 min

hope ya didn't buy all the Blueberry Muffins at Lidl  much nicer than those gert big German cakes in a box that you can turn into bowls if they are past their sell by date lol

These supermarkets know what they are doing. They put sweets next to the checkout to exploit the children, and they put tools next to the cooked meals or muffins etc to exploit the big children. Always seems to work on me anyway - yet another pack of drill bits will always come in handy, and at those prices who can resist?

I needed baked goods this morning and went out of my way to not go into Lidl for fear of spending this month's tool budget on things I really don't need (as opposed to buying what I need but deciding I need the Veritas version and overspending anyway!)

I'm pleased to hear I'm not alone in this!

The price they charge for things is unbelievable. When I got to the till I honestly expected to pay double what I did! I think that's part of the problem. The prices are so reasonable that you don't feel as much quilt as you might if they were twice the price!

On the plus side, when I was unpacking all my surprise purchases I suddenly realised that the hobby knife wasn't really any use to me being that I have a nice big manly Fat Max Stanley knife. So I've popped it away in the drawer for SHMBO christmas =D>

Phew! I'm glad I haven't been to Lidl then. Called into Axminster to swap a dodgy pen mandrel and spent £60 though. Dunno how that happened. #-o

Is that how much a newspaper is nowadays. ? Glad I kicked that habit.

I think they were just over 20p when I went cold turkey.

It's a science/black art, and we don't stand a chance.

I've seen farmers handling the 'freshly reheated part-baked goods' in my local Lidl (Aberystwyth). I always wondered how well they scrub their hands after having them up their livestock of choice.

They won't use the tongs provided, it's difficult enough getting the locals here to use a knife & fork.

If we obsessed about where peoples hands have been, the mind would truly boggle.

That's nothing to worry about Naz...... you should see how they put the holes in the doughnuts

Ps Farmers do wash their hands, they let Maisie the cow lick them clean

If I spot something I want in the tool line from Lidl, I send the wife for it, so temptation is kept at approximately 500 meters, which is the distance to my nearest store.

I don’t complain though, if she also comes back with a bag of fresh donuts. :D

Take care.

I enjoy being tempted by all the tools at Lidls. Recently I have purchased an impact driver, nailer, jigsaw, Japanese saw, craft knives, wire strippers, electric radiator, nippers, pliers, hole saw set, magnifier, work trousers, thermal socks etc etc., and all of these when shopping for fruit and veg which is far better at Lidls than it is at Morrisons or Tescos. The Lidls chilled/frozen fish is also very good value as are the fillet steaks.
